In the Navy and recently moved to Calvert County - looking to shift from catfish on the Potomac to Rockfish on the bay (it's only 4 miles from the house and the Potomac is now 50+ miles). Spent the winter accumulating parachutes, Stretch 25's and umbrellas. Getting ready to make up my leaders but not sure how short I can make them and still be effective. Fishing out of a 21' CC and would like to keep the leaders as short as possible. If ya have the time I would appreciate some guidance.

Thanks, Tawn

Tawn,

I run 6 feet and 12 feet on my tandem lines. I also know some people will connect straight to the umbrella if you use Mono. I still like to have 10-12 feet, of leader so I can hand line the fish to the net, seems to help with less experienced people on the boat.

Ditto 6 an 12 on tandems, 12 to 15 on spoons and lures with a barrel swivel in the middle, umbrellas I rig an inline weight to the umbrella with a double coastlock swivel and then line swivel direct to weight. Weight acts as a handle to guide fish into net or get close enough to grip.

I use 6' and 12' as well; but I don't run them to a 3way swivel. I make each 6 and 12 up seperatly with a 200 lb. barrel swivel at the end. That way I can mix and match my tandums to present different weights. I put all my 2,3,4 oz lures on 12 ft leaders and some 4's and all 6,8 oz. lures on 6' leaders. These would be the singles and tandums I would run off the boards. 5th (Marty)

I'm not quite as technical as the guys, I run 1 arm length and a little buffer on one and 2 arm lenghts and some buffer on the other. If you ever want to ho to check it out let me know, always happy to take another fellow Navy man fishing!

Thanks for all the replys - I'm using 30lbs Andes mono main line and using 80lbs Ande Mono for leaders. Can I get away with 6' leaders on the Mann Stretchs and single parachutes (not tandems). Plan on running umbrellas straight off the mainline off the downriggers to avoid using inline weights.

Steve... trust me... I definitely know a few that do. Even folks that go as far as bringing out the walking wheel to measure, and mark out the main line... really over complicate fishing in my opinion- but thats what you get when so many folks learn how to fish from an internet site- and not putting the time on the water...

Steve,
You disappoint me, I figured you had Joe measured exactly and used him to get an exact length  ha, I dont know, I know some folks who keep a yardstick on their boat for leader measurements, but I agree, an arm length is about 6 feet for me so it works out about the same...I know for a fact you couldnt find a leader the same lenght on my boat :)

I believe the ARM LENGTH to be an easy way to determine line lengths you want. If you wanna be a lil retentive, be sure to measure WHAT your arm length is so you know the BASE unit measure. But then I think I remember once as a child when my line got snagged on an oarlock of the rowboat. Darn if the small mouth bass had caught himself on the line. I had two choices. Tell everyone how long the line was when it snagged or elaborate on the lenght of the fish I caught. As a child, I chose the latter.

6' and 12' on tandems is the norm,,,I like them a little longer
24" on single umbrella ( frame to parachute)
18" - 20" (if running 2 Parachutes off one frame)
4'-6' on leader from inline to umbrella
all 80# mono for spring/fall
