Penn used to be really good about fixing any troubles. Most of the older guys got bought out - then Penn was sold.

Since then - it has not been the same. The early China built reels did have a lot of problems.Do not give up trying to reach Penn.

I'm not even sure who owns them anymore.

Penn is now owned by K-2 Inc. which also owns Shakespeare and Pflueger , hence the similarity in a lot of the new spinning reels those brands have out .

"I'm not even sure who owns them anymore." Its not an easy story to follow...Penn Reels was sold a few times.

But, as of today, the winner is.....The Jarden Corporation (who??). In early 2007 K-2 bought Penn. K2 had been rolling up a lot of sporting good companies. But then later in 2007, K2 got bought by Jarden, who was even a bigger fish rolling up consumer product companies. So just what all does Jarden own? Lots of things:

Fishing: Abu Garcia, All Star Rods, Berkley, Fenwick, Gulp!, Johnson reels, Mitchell, Penn, Pflueger, Shakespeare, Spiderwire, Stren, Trilene, Ugly Stick®, and XTools.

Water Sports: Sospenders, Stearns and Helium lifejackets (PFDs), Sevylor inflatable boats & floats & air mattresses,

Winter sports: all the K-2 products, Volkl Skiis, Marker Bindings, Tubbs snowshoes and more

Camping: Coleman, Marmot (clothing, tents, sleeping bags), and Campinggaz stoves

Other Sporting Goods: Rawlins and Miken sports equipment, DeBeer Lacrosse gear

small Kitchen appliances & more: Crock-Pot, FoodSaver, Mr. Coffee, Oster Blenders and shavers, Rival appliances, Seal-a-Meal, Sunbeam, Ball canning products, and more

Playing cards: Bee, Bicycle, Hoyle, Aviator and Aristocrat cards

Smoke Detectors and related: First Alert, American Sensors, Dicon and BRK Electronics

and a bunch of other product lines, from clothing to shoes to tools.

And to think all this started as a company making Ball jars! They claim (as a corporate legend made up by their PR department??) that their name is from products including JARs and stuff for the Den (i.e., the home), plus it sounds like a snooty French garden (jardin).

They are an American company (Delaware registration, corp offices in New York), sold on the NYSE as JAH, a $1 billion company (total stock value) and a part of the S&P500. It may not surprise you to learn that a wee bit of their manufacturing is done overseas, and they hire lots of overseas firms to actually make a lot of their products.

Is there anyone out there that does NOT have a Jarden product in their home, boat or tackle box right now???

I have a couple of the 220's also, wasn't very impressed with them after last season, both have given me problems. Nothing broke but I figured out that by taking them apart and putting them back together and making sure everything was tight that they work alot better now. Also just put some 330 handles on them which seem to help the torque issue they have. A 113 handle would work even better as it is even longer. If i were you, i would contact Reelsmith from the board, he can give you some good advice on your problems....

Thanks for the reference guys!

Unfortunately there isn't a "local" Penn rep anymore...Penn is representated by Pure Fishing Sales reps that work regionally and promote a multitiude of products, not just rods and reels anymore.... You can try calling Penn directly at 215-229-9415 and dial ext 181 for their service dept...leave a message if no answer, they are pretty good at returning calls....they may cover it under warranty

The 220/230 series are low end models that you really can't expect much from...kinda like the Captiva series of spinners...One thing I always recommend is purchase quality over quanity...slowly build your arsenal if you need to...you are making an investment in your equipment; not just in money but also in time, performance, satisfaction and accomplishments...you don't want heartbreak and disappointment if you end up losing that trophy of a lifetime due to equipment frailure.

Let me know if I can help...

the 220 and 230 are very similar to the penn 320 gti -

320gti/320gt2/321gti

I've got a 975 that crapped out the second time I used it, I think it needs levelwind plastic gears, Anyone know someone further south who can do it, I just don't have the time to DIY it.
try these....

penn 975 star drag - 975 international star drag

penn 975 lever drag - 975 international lever drag
