LORAN - Federal Register Notice Requesting Comments on LORAN

January 8, 2007 the USCG published a Federal Register Notice requesting public comment on the future of the LORAN-C system. Below is the Abstract from the notice.

"The Department of Transportation in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security is considering the need to continue to operate or invest in the North American LORAN-C Radionavigation System beyond fiscal year 2007. Future investment decisions might include: Decommissioning the LORAN-C system, maintaining the LORAN-C system as currently configured, or developing a fully deployed Enhanced LORAN (eLORAN) system. Contributing factors to these decisions are (1) whether the Global Positioning System (GPS) and other available back-up systems are adequate for the public's navigation and timing needs, thus making the LORAN-C system redundant, and (2) whether the eLORAN investments made to date provide enhancements that now merit consideration as a complementary capability to GPS, and not merely as a GPS back-up. The Department of Transportation and the Department of Homeland Security seek public input on the various decisions currently under consideration. For more information on LORAN, you may visit http://www.navcen.uscg.gov. DATES: Comments must be received by February 7, 2007."

The Docket # is USCG-2006-24685, go to http://dms.dot.gov/ to see the complete federal register on Loran and to post a comment.

If you desire to continue to have a navigation backup to GPS, this is you chance to tell your government. Or your chance to tell the government to turn it off because you can no longer buy receiver. The only way manufacturers will once again make Loran Receivers is if the congress make a long term commitment to retain and modernize the system.

Thanks for the heads up--

Quote--"If you desire to continue to have a navigation backup to GPS, this is you chance to tell your government."

---Loran , Has been & will continue to be an Essential Tool for navagation --Years of numbers collected in these machines should not be wasted --Not only in the fishing Element but in the navagation of rivers etc. --Imagine the cost of finding & plotting all the ness. information in just the Mississippi River --The Goverment would be wise to keep this tool--geo.

Yeah I know alot of poeple who still talk in Loran terms as well.

Converting from Loran to GPS can be tricky and i don't think there is any completly accurate conversion. If they do turn off Loran I highly suggest you take a lap around the bay with Loran and GPS and convert all your numbers that way.

No secret that our guvmint thinks......

.....differently than we do.

Makes little sense to me that LORAN only requires a few thousand dollars to maintain, while GPS requires multi-millions, but at the expense of our convenience, and possibly safety, they'd ditch the LORAN entirely.

....the LORAN towers already exist, they are fixed, they won't fall out of orbit, and I've always believed that the triangulation provided by towers permanently fixed on land gave me more accurate repeatable location data than my GPS.....

...but what do I know, I'm only a poor dumb taxpayer.
