Comments for Maryland's first ever artificial reef plan were to be received by today. To allow additional comments, and provide plan co authors Andy Loftus and Dick Stone (author of the National Artificial Reef Plan) with additional valued input, DNR is extending the comment period through next Wednesday, February 7th. If you have the opportunity, please take the time to review the plan located on the DNR website at:

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/reefs/MDReefPlanFinalDraft.pdf

For any of you that have been in attendance at meetings where Andy briefed our advisory groups and stakeholders, this is a "Maryland Artificial Reef Plan" by and for the citizens of Maryland. So I encourage each and every one of you to provide your comments. Comments may be forwarded to me at:

[email protected]

We will convene a meeting of stakeholders in late February to review the plan one final time before final approval. An Artificial Reef Committee will be appointed by DNR Secretary Griffin, and that committee will work with DNR staff and the newly formed Maryland Artificial Reef Initiative (MARI) to advise on prioritization of reef projects in the Chesapeake and on the Atlantic coast. The ARC will also determine funding priorities.

Thanks in advance for your help and comments.

Marty
