The Waterman must be lying cause you know the Scientist's couldn't be wrong......what would a couple thousand ******* crabbers know about the crab stocks? I mean they are only one the water every day....Those scientists got all the tools

How does posting higher crab catching reports help the waterman? Doesn't this mean that they still want to catch as many crabs as possible with no concern about the crab population? If they stayed in line with the DNR reports, woukldn't that help them in the long run?

Yeah, it would help them. The problem here is that DNR wasn't completely truthful with the WDS last spring. The population was actually shown to be up in the survey. But they knew if they let this be known before they had last year's emergency regs in place, it would not bode well for continuing with the restrictions. After they announced the emergency regs, and that was the news, they quietly released the full results of the WDS, which went under the publics radar. The watermen didn't report falsely. They actually caught what they reported. The difference is that there were more crabs to be caught. If this continues without controversy, DNR's next step will be to claim that, based on the estimate of the population that they released before the full wds was provided, the watermen overharvested, and that further restrictions will be required. Mark my words.
They probably have the regulation plan all ready to go. I think this was their plan all along.

So the watermen are arguing that the stock is in ok shape because they caught slightly higher numbers in 08 vs 07. This is total ****. What good is catching slightly more than one of the lowest historical averages ever? Let me know when they are catching more than the historical average and then we can talk about decreased restrictions. When the almighty dollar is at stake be wary.

Over reporting occurs because of how the DNR sets its limits. Report you catch 100bu and actually only caught 50 when the DNR cuts you by 50% you scream hardship make the same amount of money and get a govt kickback. Very smart they are.

Then on the taxes they submit reciepts which are for 50% of what they sold so they only pay taxes on half the catch ( if this is wrong please let me know how the taxes work)

Bottom line more recs pluss continued pressure from comm harvest and you are in trouble.

yes i adgree the scientist are looking for grants and future research opportunities. I find it hard to dispute though that the blue crab population is not what is was in the past and tighter restrictions could help. ( along with tighter pollution yada yada....)

Oh and I would be very suprised if anyone from harvard was working on this. I also know that watermen have been around for a long time and really KNOW the business. I am not at all suprised at what they can manage. ( also seem to have a pretty strong lobby)

Dem SMIBS is a crafty bunch..

crow i wish the money could go to other thing that would help for the future. WHat I said were obviously generalizations and hypothetical but it does happen. I feel bad for the comms who are trying to put food on the table. It used to be a very lucritive trade and for some still is but I do not think that it is one that can support the number of people that it used to. We are in our current state of affairs due to a variety of factors such as overfishing and polluting. The bay is not able to support as many people as she used to. By the very nature of there proffesion they will be the hardest hit by regs and can expect significant consequences. I am sure there is many a comm blaming much of this on the increase in rec numbers but the simple reality is that the recs can adjust. I quess what i am saying is that if I were a comm I would find another source of cash flow. Why not oyster farm? or distribute? or god knows what else figure it out now because the long term trend the bay has been exhibiting is in a downward slope for almost all species. Heck find a use for cow nose rays will ya.

If you had read the article the "big deal" is explained in the first few lines
You have to put a banner on each thread telling me whether I'm supposed to believe the state officials each time.

If it's an anti waterman statement, am I supposed to believe the state official? If it's anti recreational, am I not? Is that the way it works?
