I Just got this from ASMFC, but all Virginians and anglers here will know it soon enough. EVERYTHING I said turns out to be true - the soft money, corruption, lack of anyone in our government except a very few giving a damn. Read it and weap and if this isn't enough to get our readers to vote these guys out of office, I don't know what it will take

In Win for Omega Protein, Virginia Bill to Turn Over Menhaden Management Was Defeated

SEAFOODNEWS.COM [Virginian Pilot] By Lee Tolliver - January 29, 2016 -

A pair of Virginia House of Delegates bills designed to change how menhaden fishing is controlled were shot down Thursday in the General Assembly.

HB150 and 151 were tabled in the Committee on Agriculture, Chesapeake and Natural Resources Chesapeake sub-committee.

Only Delegates Alfonso H. Lopez (D) and R. Lee Ware (R) voted to have the bills advanced.

HB150 was designed to turn the menhaden fishery over to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, which oversees every other species in Virginia waters. Menhaden currently are the only fish species controlled by the General Assembly.

HB151 would have pushed the menhaden fishery outside of three miles along the Virginia coast, and out to one mile of the shoreline in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.

Both bills were introduced by Virginia Beach's Barry Knight, who has for nearly a decade sought change in the state's menhaden fishery.

"You fight the the good fight," Knight said, disappointed with the outcome when he thought going in the his bills had a better chance than in previous years. "I want to put this in the hands of the scientists.

"But they (Omega Protein of Reedville) had all their big lobbyists they paid to keep their purview. But I don't back down from anybody and I'm going to represent my people and I'd do this again next year."

Definition - Political corruption is the use of powers by government officials for illegitimate private gain. An illegal act by an officeholder constitutes political corruption only if the act is directly related to their official duties, is done under color of law or involves trading in influence.

Shouldn't any delegate on the Ag committee receiving money from Omega, be prosecuted? Our former governor is in jail for the same thing.

The only way to be successful is for Virginia's Recreational Anglers to get truly involved including: by writing letters, joining & supporting organizations that fight for recreational angler rights and asking your fellow anglers to be more involved.

If you don't things will likely never change.

Several years ago RFA was contacted and they sent representatives to speak with representatives of some clubs and others, etc. They indicated that a membership drive should be conducted so that they would have good representation in Hampton Roads. Less than 100 people signed up. On that basis, they could not afford to put forth much/any effort in our area.

The good news is there has been more discussion lately than there has been in a very long time. We need to educate the public and keep the conversation going.

Read the management section of the noaa link. Then read the three studies by the scientists from all over the world. Saying their is an issue and the fish need to be managed differently. It's pretty easy to see somthing is wrong yet some refuse to admit it. The sedar 40 says ecological refference points need to be established. The ASMFC acknowledges there is an issue that's why the Chesapeake bay cap was recently decreased and will stay decreased and they are working on amendment 3. There is a real issue.

The bills were not about quotas. Not about the good old days of more bait and fish. Not about losing jobs in Omega. Not about putting anyone out of business. HB 150 and SB 98 were simply about having the VMRC manage menhaden. The quota would have been the same so really nothing would have changed except getting politicians out of managing fish. Barry Knight started out addressing the committee by saying not one of the committee members could pick out a menhaden out of the stack of fish on the table so why does the General Assembly want to manage a fish they know nothing about. Sadly, those speaking in the microphone Thur did not stay focused on the purpose of the bill neither from the angler or Omega side. Nothing done rises to the level of the corruption but does stink nonetheless.

The stock assesment is like saying there are plenty of people in the world so there must be plenty of people on the north pole. It takes a large area and is based on assumptions. Only a small portion of the coast is heavily fished. The truth will come out soon enough. It is pretty common knowledge that the truth will come out. The bill refferenced is just locking in the quota increase our govenor okayed last year without the GA.

Mike some of the delegates did not stay on subject either. Talk of growing corn and rain, another repeating do you report your catch over and over again. That does not have much to do with menhadrn. We will get them next year.
