A memo released by the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council staff on Friday revised the earlier recommended fluke cuts downward from 43 percent to 25 percent for 2016.

In making the revision, the Council staff recognized the substantial negative impact such a reduction would have on the recreational and commercial fisheries, the seafood industry and markets and fishing communities they support.

Council memo on drastic fluke cuts sparks deep concerns

In the memo, the staff said that the fisheries for summer flounder would not be able to effectively absorb such a large reduction in the acceptable biological catch (ABC) in one year. Such a cut would have a devastating effect on local charter and party boats, bait and tackle shops and recreational boating.

Instead of the one-year plan called for in its initial memo, the Council staff is recommending a “phased in” approach for achieving the reduction that will take place over three years. The staff’s earlier memo, which was issued on July 9, sparked widespread concern in an industry that is already struggling.

The recommendations were made in advance of the Council’s Science and Statical Committee (SSC) meeting taking place this Wednesday in Baltimore.

If its that bad just close it all together...its not like anything is going to help..they've been putting size and bag limit restrictions on for over a decade and I still catch less than when I was in my teens. I dont know when people are going to get it.. The Oceans and Bays cant take the Rec and Comm harvest anymore..Period!

Drug dealers and prostitutes are just trying to make a living too..doesn't make it right. Allocations of scarce resources need to go where they have the greatest economic impact and societal benefit.

Make me president. I would make all commercial fishing hook and line with max 3 hooks per line rule and all net, trotlines, etc. Dead in 5 years from signed bill date. Nothing but upside. More jobs for commecial fisherman, more natural fish biomass, more stable water front communities, more eco friendly approach on the seas no dead fish trails, premium price on saltwater fish its a high end meal now you just run nets and scoop up a flounder etc. Dalt water fish are not a fish factory like catfish or talapia. Current day Commercial fishing to me is like buffalo hunters years ago. The resource will expire it is just a matter of time when it will.

My mantra for YEARS... Eliminate non-selective forms of fishing. Industry needs can be met by hook and line given correct markets (recs allowed to sell harvests).

I have been in mrytle beach all week. Been walking on pier every morning and just notice the regulations posted. Flounder 14inches /20 per person. Sheep's and spades 20 per person, rockfish 10 per person.

Boat load of excellent anglers (7 on boat) returned from an all day trip to CBBT for VA flounder....the limit is 4 per angler=28 fish; they caught 1 oyster toad, 1 ray, and 2 flounder. So it really does not matter what the limit is if there are no fish ! They did not even get a limit of oyster toads !! Bob Allen

ASMFC and the Dept of Commerce

I just fired off another useless email to them regarding this unsurprising decision in favor of resource exploitation. I mentioned that we fight over fractions of an inch in the minimum size allowable for a species that, given a chance, can exceed 20 lbs in size! I think the problem is always the same: money. This government agency has a mission statement that has nothing to do with conservation or sane use of fisheries - its about maximizing the catch so that the source of income is tolerable without collapsing and becoming commercially extinct. Thats what the Dept of Commerce does - support industry to the max and yes, listen to the recreational community when they cant avoid it, but always catering to the money. NOTHING will change, ever, unless the recreational community gets its act together and speaks with one voice. I doubt ill live to see that. Thanks Dr. Allen for bringing this up.

If the recreational and commercial industries cannot absorb a 43% catch reduction, then can they better absorb a fisheries collapse?

If a 43% reduction next year was not necessary to avert a fisheries collapse, then why was the reduction ever set at that?
