chicken liver is the absolute best and fastest producing bait for a minnow trap by far. I have tried crabs and dogfood and bread, and lots of other stuff too but consistantly have the best luck with ckicken liver.

I buy cheap cans of cat food from Walmart. Usually something with fish smell. Less mess to deal with, when done just throw the can in the trash. If you use a can don't pull the top completely off just partially open.

Any of these baits will work. I use bread and sandwich meat. Some people say that the minnows will eat themselves to death with the bread but that has never happened to me. I think 'where' you put the trap is more important than the bait. Minnows don't go into open water because they will get eaten. Throw the trap onto some rocks or into the bullrushes in shallow water. Just enough to cover the top of the trap. You will also find that some spots produce larger minnows. I have one spot that I can get a trap full of finger mullet size minnows every time!
