There is a possibility that I may be moving to Delaware from
Maryland later this year. I am retired and would be moving
partly because of high MD taxes! Any ideas where to move
to in DE? I thinking near Harrington or Dover as the wife and
I both like the casinos and I like fishing. I have a 19 foot CC
that I have used extensively while fishing the Chesapeake
Bay. Are the taxes really that much better in DE than in MD?
I know there is no state sales tax but I'm looking at state
income tax and property taxes.

Thanks to anyone who can provide insight and perhaps convince
me to relocate.

The taxes are very cheap in Sussex and Kent county. If you are a senior citizen then you also get a discount. Average taxes in delaware are around 900-1200/ yr. I think you would be looking more like 800/ year. I would look more torwards Milton. It is still close to the casinos and really close to the water. If you need any helo with a mortgage give me a call.

Good luck

Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply Geoffrey. I have been doing a little research
and noticed the taxes are quite a bit different in each of the three
counties. Milton is one area I looked at. Yes, I am a "senior citizen"
(62 yrs old). The purchase of the house would be without a mortgage
as we would sell our house (with some luck) here in MD and buy
the house in DE for cash.

Bill,

I'm a born and raised Marylander, now Delaware transplant. Make the move, don't look back! I'm in the very western section of Sussex county outside of Laurel on the water. I personally can't stand the beach scence (did OC growing up as a teen and into my 20's) unless it's a VA barrier island and drum fishing the surf. I would recommend west of RT 113 unless you're into the beach, traffic, and over valued properties :D (just kiddin'). I know a lot of people like the beach area...

One thing about DE, you don't have the county piggy back tax on your personal income like in MD. I'm from Wicomico, so the tax rate was 60% of the MD personal income tax. You will save a bunch on personal income tax. Not sure what part of MD your from, but I would bet the property tax rate will be much lower. As expected, Sussex is the lowest rate, followed by Kent then New Castle.

If you like the slot thing and quieter life, why not Bridgeville, Seaford, Milford, Fredrica, Harrington area. Plenty of new construction, short hop up RT 13 to Dover or jump over to RT 1 and a quick ride up to Northern Delaware. You can always drag a boat over to Lewes or Bowers Beach if you wan't Delaware Bay action. We have the Nanty if you like freshwater, and that's a year round gig.

Best of luck, and it's nice to be from slower lower Delawhere?:D

Maybe

The wife and I are still discussing the move. If we do, and that's a big if,
it will be to the Harrington area or one of the towns nearby. I don't want
to get too far from Dover as I'm retired military and the wife uses the
commissary here at Ft Meade. My real estate taxes now are about $2k
per year and it looks like in Delaware they are around $800-1000 or so.
Thanks for everyone's input and if you think of more - bring it on!! :clapping2:

Delaware does have a sales tax but it's a hidden sales tax. It's called the Gross Reciepts Tax. The business owner just marks up the item ahead of time. The consumer pays the tax one way or the other. Delaware's taxes are lower now, but the Democrats running our state (into the ground) are raising taxes and fees all of the time. I hope you like high cancer rates also.

i don't know much about the taxes situation so i cant help u there because I'm only 14......but iv fished the DE bay a lot over thos few years....the fishing is good if u know what ur doing.......Milford is a good spot to look at because its nice around that area but if u like to fish ur about 10min away from a boat ramp taking u right to the bay.......in the bay there is great fishing. iv fought flounder up to 9 pounds and striped bass up to 25 and the best fishing, is the tog fishing with fish growing up to 10 pounds in the reef sites. the reef sites is a good place to catch trophy tog in the winter and doormats in the summer. my dad and i started something new this year, we always read about these monster drum up to 90 or 100 pounds in 15 feet of water just 3 miles of Ceedercreek inlet. we tried it this year and i got a 75 ponder and my dad got a 65 ponder. so if u like to fish i would recommended Milford.
