The Nassau grouper will be listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, after the National Marine Fisheries Service determined that it faces an extinction risk from overfishing; the decision was published in a final rule in the Federal Register.

Although the fish still occupies most of its historical range in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean, the number of fish that gather to spawn has declined because of past fishing pressure.

"...Although harvest of Nassau grouper has diminished due to management measures, the reduced number and size of spawning aggregations and the inadequacy of law enforcement continue to present extinction risk to Nassau grouper..."
