As Skip asked, it is more dependant on the water you will be fishing at a given time...most fishing on the Upper Bay will allow you to get by with a mono leader since the water will be cloudy or dirtier looking...cleaner, clear water will warrant a need for the flourocarbon leader...another note - when using flouro as a leader, use "leader" material not regular flouro line as the leader...leader material will be a little stronger and alot more abrasion resistant which you will want when fishing around structure.

Pickerel have teeth that can cut some leaders. There are two schools of thought - well really three. Old school goes with a short light wire leader on lures. Not too many still use wire but it does work.

Some use light line and it seems the line goes between the teeth. This works good on lures the Pickerel are not likely to swallow.4-6 lb yest seems best for this.

Others like 17-20 lb leader - with fluro being a little bit tougher.I use about 18'' of 20 lb clear Ande. This way I can cut off /retie alot before I need a new leader. You really only need about 6-10 '' of leader for Pickerel.I like a back to back Uni knot to attach the leader.

Be sure to mash down the barb and if you can- use single hooks for Pickerel.
