New Bill Proposes Commercial Domination
Of Virginia's Chesapeake Bay & Tidal Fisheries
Opposition to SB1087 Developing
A bill in the Virginia General Assembly proposes to increase by 2 the number of Virginia Marine Resources Commission seats dedicated to commercial fishermen. If passed, commercial fishermen would hold 3 of the 10 seats and as compared to only 1 recreational angler. The end result will hand over a clear advantage to commercial fishing interests and put at extreme risk the fisheries and marine resources of the Chesapeake Bay & Virginia's Tidal Rivers.
It has taken decades of hard work to get the VMRC to a well balanced board and today the commercial watermen and recreational fishing interests each hold one seat. SB1087 would end that balance. We need to act quickly because this bill has already passed in the Senate, is headed to the House this week and must be stopped.
SB1087 is opposed by the Coastal Conservation Association Virginia, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Virginia Seafood Council, numerous Virginia recreational fishing clubs, and many others who believe that the management of marine resources and should be free of bias and special interests.
Those that want to help maintain Virginia's balanced management of the public's marine resources and help the fisheries of the Chesapeake Bay & Virginia's Tidal River are encouraged to immediately contact their delegates and the delegates shown below via phone and email.
