18. THIS IS AN AMATEUR TOURNAMENT ONLY. No vessel registered to fish in
the Amateur Division may have on board during tournament hours as: captain, crew,
angler, consultant or observer ("Professionals") persons who are or have been (either
bay or ocean) a: professional or paid captain, charter boat captain, mate on a charter
boat, holder of a commercial fin-fishing license issued by any governmental entity; or
professional angler. Professionals include, but are not limited to: persons who derive
income from fishing; persons who have either won $20,000 or more in tournament money,
or won three (3) or more tournaments in the past two (2) years; persons who are paid
to endorse fishing products; persons holding a license as a fishing guide; any captain or
crew of a "For-Hire Boat;" self-professed professionals; and, persons whom are publicly
known as professionals. All such persons are encouraged to enter the Special Charter
Boat and Professional Category.

very different from last years rules and i have always fished it in the past including last spring. i bought a potomac hook n line lic two years ago - found out a couple months later that i could not fish the spring tournament unless i sold it so i did and have fished it since. now just by having owned it i'm out of the spring tourney... not good... where did these new rules come from, you may want to review your history to make sure you can still fish this tournament!!
old rules: 16. Professional charter boat captain's (bay or ocean), any holder of a commercial fin fish fishing license issued by any state and professional fisherman are ineligible as anglers, operators, or onboard observers in the main tournament. However, these individuals may enter the special chaterboat catergory in the tournament. Professional fishermen are any individual who has won $30,000.00 (excluding TWT) or more in fishing tournaments conducted on the Chesapeake Bay during the 36 months prior to the day of the tournament.

Obviously the MSSA is trying to make sure the "Amateur" category is strictly for amateurs and felt the need to stipulate in the rules, what they felt the difference between an amateur and a professional is for the purposes of this tournament.

real addict they did a lot of changes because of last years trouble

and they added that pay out is based on a 650 boat field, but first place overall is a guarantee

my take on this is that anyone that holds a 50 pot LLC is ineligable to fish also.

Way too much money and way too many problems last year. They have no other choice then to lay out a very detailed entry qualification. Keep it fair and keep it out of court. Amateur means just that. Eliminate the fine lines as much as possible, otherwise, guys and crews like mine, (weekend warriors), will keep their $1500.00 and not renew their memberships.

The rules seem a bit over the top, but that's what happens when you put a lot of money on the table. If you like that kind of thing, I have no quarrel with you, but it's not for me. I fish for fun....once the tournament payout gets above fun money (several hundred bucks, tops), then all the rules and bickering come into play, the temptation to cheat goes up, tempers flare and the fun is gone, as least for me.

These rules are pretty strict and will change the playing field, but have been done so as to not repeat what happened last year. We all know what happened but not many of us know how much confusion and trouble it caused. The previous fine line has just been made bold. I hope all can adjust and the tourney goes well..............Gary

I don't see a problem. This is meant to be an amatuer tournament. Let's keep it that way. If you are a pro or will have the influence of a pro in any way, then enter the pro tournament. Seems pretty simple and straight forward to me.

They need to be more clear about the "mate" ineligability. I'm sure there are a lot of guys who have mated here and there for Charter captains who need a "fill-in" and made a few bucks for a hand onboard.

I have never been paid to fish but I have given a hand onboard charters and my spring trolling spread reflects theirs...does this mean I am ineligible? come on now.

Professional would mean paid for it...if you were paid, in tips, you were a mate, and by the rules ineligible...if you just helped out on a charter boat, you are not a mate..
