A descent end to an off year of 2005. We left Deltaville around 7:45 and headed for Cape Charles. Stopped just after 38 and picked up a 19” to get the smell out. Very slow fishing. There were a lot of boats between 36 and 42. There were only relatively sparse birds and bait. Picked up a 33 1/4” slot (painful) and released just northwest of 36A and east of Cape Charles in about 53’ of water. Then about an hour later caught a fat 35 lb 40 incher. Then didn’t get any more bites. That was it for there then headed up to 41. There were only a few birds but the best pods of bait I have seen in a while were just south of the 41. We picked up a 36” keeper followed by a 32” slot (ouch!). Also caught one more 19” then left around 2:30 just as it was calming down and the sun was starting to shine.
Most were caught on chartreuse Stretch 25 broken back or standard chartreuse & blue trolled WFB and the 32” on chartreuse umbrella. They were caught in relatively deep water 50-60 feet.
The forty incher was reeled in by a friend on his first striper fishing trip!
