I can't tell from the picture what kind of fish is it is ? Why do you think it is a Rockfish ?

If it is a Striper and the picture IS from NC, than it is legal.

Dennis
sure looks like a rock to me........ if the captain was fishing out of Rudee and he was in NC waters when the pic was taken, and then he returned to Rudee, wouldn't he have a hard time proving that the fish was gaffed in NC waters and not VA when the man checks him at the dock. Sure seems like more trouble than it's worth, so why not just net 'em?

"Other Virginia restrictions: You may not combine possession limits when seasons overlap or you fish in multiple jurisdictions. Gaffing striped bass or attempting to gaff striped bass is illegal in Virginia marine waters."

Help me out. I am getting old. Where in the picture do you see a Rockfish ?

By the way I do NOT believe in gaffing them. Where does it say in the post that the boat was fishing out of Rudee and caught a fish in North Carolina ?

Lip gaff ??? Other Virginia restrictions: You may not combine possession limits when seasons overlap or you fish in multiple jurisdictions. Gaffing striped bass or attempting to gaff striped bass is illegal in Virginia marine waters.

I don't read where a lip gaff shot is legal...... does anyone ???

By the way that big fella is holding that rod... the mate may have thought it might have been something else.. Who knows.. Who cares

That's the point...... if they have the nads to show stripers being gaffed, they must have been in NC waters....... it's a big assumption that they were in NC waters, nothing was posted as such. Is it possible that who ever posted that pic doesn't know the regulations and that pic was taken in Va waters, probably not, but still ??

The picture came off the VBFC site today. That boat was out of Rudy. I honestly don't care whether or not a gaff was used - I really want to know why the heck it is illegal? I mean, there are size limits on Cobia and, unless I am mistaken which is possible, people gaff them. If the fish is undersize use a net, if not, a gaff if that is what you want. I would much rather gaff a 40"+ striper than net her. Its easier.
