Well, I survived. Any trip out and back is a good trip. Other than that, didn't see a drum all weekend. Conditions were near perfect, hard southwest blow, water temp in upper fifties, full moon, clear water, bait, FHBs. The only thing missing was the fish. I stood on the south bar at Ocracoke from 9 at night until 9 in the morning and bailed dog sharks and skates while getting pummled by the surf. Met some interesting characters out on the bar. One dude caught his first drum in 1953 - he had fifty years of strange but true fish stories. Saturday morning I ran up to the Point at Buxton where there were working birds and more anglers but still no fish. Hung out there watching the crowd bail more dog sharks until the rain started then we called it a day and headed home. Offshore trip was cancelled due to 30 knot winds and 9-foot seas. Oh well, that's fishing in the salt: if the skunk don't get ya the weather will. Maybe I should take up trout fishing?
