My friend lost his wife a few months ago and has not been out much at all. I am going to see him in a few weeks and he wants to go fly fishing and he lives in Northern Va. Could someone offer up some ideas on where to take him for a few hours? This cold weather could make it tough, but he really does need to get out some......and there couldn't be anything better than fishing.

Any help is Much appreciated.

Most of the NoVA water (ponds) is frozen over, that includes the creeks and rivers.

There is a cool little fly fishing show in Middleburg on Feb. 8 (Sunday)....great way to spend a cold day. I guarantee that many there can point you to some fishable water.

Trout Stocking/Fairfax Co

Check out this site Trout Fishermen Lured by Freshly Stocked Lakes for the stocking schedule of Lake Accotink and others. Starts the beginning of February. Easy fishing from the bank, but usually crowded on stocking day. We've caught trout in Accotink creek as far down as where it crosses under Rt 236 (Little River Trnpk) and the beltway/495. Good luck - Andy

edit - Lake Accotink is stocked below the dam! Also, they used to stock Four Mile Run (and others) in Arlington from Wilson Blvd down to where it flushes into the Potomac - couldn't find the website/schedule for '09 though.

For more accurate info, give The Angler's Lie a call - local fly shop in Arlington and the folks there can point you in the right direction....

Anglers Lie went out of business about a year ago.

Take him to TieFest man.. meet Lefty and Popovics.. cast some rods.. throw some drinks back.
For the next three or 4 weeks, it's going to be tough to fly fish. I mean you can do it but it is going to be tough

Thanks for the help guys, The Tie Fest idea seems like it would be the best option given the weather.
I'll check into the tie fest info and see if it fits his schedule.

Thank you all so much.

Definitly consider the fly show in Middleburg. You may also consider Passage Creek with small nymphs near Front Royal, especially in the C+R section there are still some trout left over from the stockings this past fall. Not frozen over as of 1 1/2 weeks ago.

Hey everyone,
Boy talk about a great response...........you have really been helpful and given me some good ideas. I am going to try and convince hime to go to TieFest first and if he can't get away for that long, I am going to try Jim's suggestion for Passage Creek. I live up in Rising Sun Maryland so I am going to I will start doing some research on how to get there from his house and a Temp license etc.
I really appreciate all of the PM's and the posts.

Good Fishing to you all and look forward to meeting some of you.
Regards,

Joe

Thanks for the info DamselFish.
I will be going down to visit on the 14th so I won't be able to make the TU Show this time.

Really appreciate the input and details very much. This may be an event that we should plan to attend next year when there ain't too much else to do.
