I know it's late but here goes anyway....
Fished the surf in Nags Head, Cochina Beach, The Point and finally Ocracoke New Year's weekend, and saw lots of people fishing but very few catching. The only catches witnessed were of Spiny Dog Fish caught on fish finder rigs on cut mullet.
We did see birds working over fish just past the breakers but were not able to cast out far enough to hook up. I'm pretty sure the guys in the boats were doing OK, we saw them Friday chasing gulls in front of the hotel.
We did drive past a 6 maybe 8 foot dead hammerhead washed up on the beach at The Point that was pretty cool to look at. Thought about staging a "look what we caught" pic but gave up on the idea once we we realized that Mr. Hammer wasn't wearing deodorant.
Ocrakoke was nice and with no wind it was downright warm. Didn't see a whole lot going on down there and alot of the places to eat and stay at were either closed or getting ready to close. Besides a spectacular ferry ride to and from, the only other thing to report is me coming down with a bad case of salmonella that robbed me of 4 days and 5 pounds.
I think I ate a bad burger somewhere along the way that pretty much exploded in my stomach. It was pure misery while it lasted, but luckily it didn't kick in untill the end of the trip.
