Hi everyone,

I need some help here deciding which kayak I should buy as my first. I live in Southern Maryland and have ample opportunity to fish fresh and saltwater with a kayak, so I'm taking the plunge. I like both of these kayaks, I am looking for some insight as to which one is better for a first time kayaker. Pros and cons of both would be great!

Thanks

Any reason for opting for a 11ft boat over a 12 or 13 footer? I also fish in Southern Maryland (say hi if you see a guy in a yellow yak with a goofy red hat), and some of the spots I fish are 1 to 2 miles from the launch. A longer boat will help cover that distance faster. However, if you have storage issues, that's a different problem.

I had Manta Ray 12 when Liquid Logic made them. I found that it didn't track well enough for my needs and ended up selling it. I don't know if Native improved the design any. The seats that Native uses are awesome, however, and will make it easy to spend lots of time in the saddle.

I really like having a large center hatch for storing a dry bag and anchor, accessing my sonar battery, etc, and the Native doesn't have that. I really like the Rod Pods on the Ocean Kayak Trident series. The Rod Pod allows for easy under deck storage of rods, anchors, fish bags, etc. I would get a 15 footer if I had a place to store it. I know a number of guys that fish the Bay with the 13ft model and really like them. I think the 11ft model shares a lot of similarities.

One thing to consider if you opt for the angler models rather than outfitting them yourself, be sure to check that the flush mounted rod holders have sealed bottoms. If not, they'll allow water into the hull when it's rough. When I purchased my Tarpon, the angler model had open rod holder tubes :52:, so I bought the regular model.
