I am wondering what other people use for what parts when they do the yearly maintenance and/or rebuild their reels. I use Penn Reel oil on just about everything except the drags, on them I put a thin layer of Cal's drag grease. Any other suggestions?

Oil on bearings only, usually Red or Yellow Rocket Fuel. Then a coat of Cal's drag grease on the drag washers that gets wiped off. All screw holes get a shot of grease, as well as a thin layer (more a film really) of Cal's grease inside the reel frame/body to prevent corrosion. Outside washed down with freshwater after every trip and external moving parts lubricated with oil. Bearings get a fresh shot every so often as well.

Ok, so what is "red or yellow rocket fuel"? What is the grease in the screw holes for, it seems like that would make them more prone to loosen up. I thought about thread locker but wasn't sure that was a good idea either.

The grease in the screw holes keeps them from siezing up, and helps keeps saltwater out. It will absolutely not allow them to loosen up, at least I've never had that problem. The red and yellow rocket fuel can be found here

Look through posts from a guy named alantani. He does a ton of reel rebuilds and most of the tips he puts out can be applied to any reel. The guy knows his stuff.

I wax the inside of the side plates and the frame. Grease on gears and linkage and oil in bearings. I use Super Lube and 3&1 oil in the Blue bottle.

The thing to remember is to use the bare minimum amount of grease and oil on a reel. Excess of either will only collect dust and dirt. Crud up a reel in no time.
