Orange plastic bushel baskets

Many crabbers are using the orange plastic bushel baskets made by ROPAK. I called this company today to find out the volume of measurement to their baskets. They told me that they were 11.9 US gallons. The standard legal bushel is 9.309 US gallons. You can see from the picture that they are noticeably bigger.

I called DNR this afternoon and they have received many calls about this and are aware of the size difference. They are going to put a post about this on their website soon. They told me not to use them.

I like the baskets because they are strong, durable and won't retain bacteria that the wood will. The next time I go out i will fill a wooden bushel basket with crabs...hopefully:clapping2: and dump them in the plastic basket to see how high it fills it.. That also varies as the crabs settle and relax. I was told at Snood Fest when I bought the baskets not to fill it but leave 3-4 inches open. They are great baskets BUT be careful how much you put in them. I hope this saves some one here from a fine.........Good luck crabbing...............Gary

It's not up to DNR to have to figure it out on the water. If you don't hold comm, i would advise that you stay with real bushel baskets.

Keeps things simple, and that's what you and they want when you get boarded.

I'll figure it out and keep using them. I usually have a second licensed crabber on the boat any way. ......There is no law that says that you must put them in a wooden bushel basket. If DNR challenges me........ ..they have to prove it:D.I am keeping it simple.........simple for me to clean and carry:thumbup:.........Gary

I intend to make plastic bushell baskets in the color of taupe.

Identical dimensions as wooden bushell baskets and approved by state weights and measures.

More to come!

I can do this!

Gary,

What was snood fest? THANKS!
Snood Fest is put on by members of the TF crabbing board and occurs in February. We also have Crab Fest in October. Both are great events and the cost is $10.00 which covers the rent of the building. Each person brings a dish and the crabs are provided. Keep an eye on the crabbing board in September. If you are a paying member of TF you can do a search to find out more and see pictures............Gary

There's nothing wrong with using the ORANGE Basket for culling the crabs when you use a trotline. Then just fill the wooden legal basket with your catch. Providing you get into them hot n heavy? Been really SLOW going so far.

The plastic milk crates are good for culling too.
I use the orange baskets for my trotlines and other supplies and wooden baskets for the crabs. I also sell these plastic baskets at the crabfest and snoodfest if anyone is interested.

Those baskets are great for storing your line in though

John's baskets have holes in them!!:D
Thanks Jerry

Now no one will want them from me:rolleyes:
I love them like Gary said and I think that they are way better than the wooden ones because I can clean them up after a day of crabbing. I have taken a full bushel of crabs and put them in there and then marked it when they calmed down and that's where I stop. I may have a few extra every once in a great while but I don't catch that many to often. I love them for my gear and lines as well. I think they are great and worth the money.
Thanks Jerry

Au Contraire Mon Amie!!!!

Holes are good!!!! Holes are good!!!!

They allow the water to drain.

They allow the line stored in them to dry.

They eliminate unnecessary weight.

They let the little crabs escape.:D

I get ALL my orange plastic baskets from John, folks!!

After all, he's the cheapest guy in Leola!:D

John, here's hoping you and Beth load up on them critters today.
