Hi Guys (Brandon please don't banish me to the other boards at least not yet)
My Home furance is going bad woke up to a 63 degree house now 4 nights in a row (Okay for me not for the kids) (12 years old forced air/a/c Carrier) Any HVAC experts out there ???? :helpsmilie::helpsmilie::helpsmilie:
Do I replace the sending board and main wiring harness (which is on back order till end of Feb.) or just go ahead and replace the furance all together?? Of course money is always the object and sinking 600 into something that will last a year more or going to newer?
Had a really bad experiece with a Lennox in Buffalo sunk a good amount into new wiring sending boards etc... only to have to replace it

Thanks everyone

This is an old trick but might help you out.Get 2-3 cans of the compressed air used to clean electronics.Turn the unit off and try to blow all the boards/switches/etc clean.Only cost a few dollars to try.

Sometimes dust on a contact can cause a unit to have trouble.12 years worth of dust might be the problem.

You leave a lot of information that requires assumptions to be made that may lead you to the wrong conclusions. How old is the furnace. Normally an old furnace is only 60% efficient and if it is 20 or more years old I would not put a lot of money into it since the heat exchanger has a life expectancy of 20 years. Also, you mention that you wake up in the morning with 63 degree house temperature. Does the unit perform OK during the daytime? Do you have an automatic setback thermostat?

the furnace is 13 years old (came with the house)
Do have a setback thermostat but I check the settings over and changed the batteries etc... The system won't kick on when I overide the settings. I have to go down and tap the main wire harness to the main board then it will cycle. the temp in the house drops thru the day and the system won't kick on
I did disconnect them and reconnect them with the system off and the tech was out as well and did the same (monkey see monkey do) and ran the voltmeter on the system (with no apprent issues)
Thanks Tim and Mike B-mail sent

Had a tech at my house to,with vent door off,he kept turning
the unit off using the emergency off switch.
After a while it was working normal, checked with meter and
everything was fine.
He looked at me as if to ask what the problem was, called
the owner of the heating company(my buddy) and he told
him to get part # off mother board and we should replace it.
Had him install a new digi thermostat before he left.
($135.00 for stat and work to be finished)
Called my buddy the next day and told him the heater ran
just fine all night, don't order any parts.(Havn't seen any money back)
The next time it rained, the cycle problem started again, apparently an
ever slight leak was hitting the top of the unit where some vents are,
under these vents is a switch, which was being shorted out by the water
droplets that hung under the top when hitting the vent fins.
Apparently when the tech took off the cover and cycled the unit using
the emergency off switch it allowed the water to dry, essentialy fixing
the problem.

Hey John - Let us know how you make out. Seems like there is anyone you need on this board. I'm having a dual HVAC system installed in the new house right now. Interesting watching it being built with all of the ductwork and the air handlers. I was fishing in Hatteras with an HVAC mechanic last Fall that helped me understand enough to be dangerous. Jim

Got boost, hes got that nasty circurt board that carrier could never fix. I have sent him out for the conversion kit.... that wiil fix it. Unusal to see that board on an 80% but a few were shipped with it.

George, Start the system in heat pump mode, grab the suction line(larger of the two copper lins with armflex insulation on it)if it is warm at 30F your freon is good. As much time as I spent locating your leak it will probably be full or flat. Don't forget to wash the condenser(salt air and dust) and keep your filter clean.
Best Regards
jim
