The MTA is proposing higher tolls for tailers, for example towing a single axle boat trailer across the Bay Bridge is currently $5.00, if approved the new rate will be $9.00

Go to the following link and click on Public Notice to see full details:

MdTA: contact us

Aditionally they are proposing a $1.50 a month service charge for EZ Pass accounts. That's pretty irritating because I often go several months with out ever using it. Not to mention the hold a $25 balance on my account. Seems like they should use the interest from that money to cover admin costs.

For what it's worth they are taking public commment at:

I suspect it's coming wether we like it or not.

People who dont use there EZ-pass often will cancel, use other lanes, going back to the old days of backing up traffic and burning more fossil fuels while sitting in traffic.......something Dems say they are going to fix.....Right. Owemally is going to make it easier and easier for Earlich to get re-elected:clap:

They should do a way with tolls all together and ad a penny or two to fuel taxes if need be.

Tolls cause more accidents, increase congestion on the roads around them, create more wear on the road through people braking for them, create more pollution, increase fuel consuption in vehicles, and put the people that work them in a hazzardous work environment.

I'm sure the couple hundred thousand out of state travelers who cross the Bay Bridge going to OC or cutting the corner off going up to Jersey and Delaware would certainly be all for the residents of MD footing bill in it entirety.

In fact, I would imagine that the trucking industry would be thrilled to death. A 200 miles short cut without a toll :thumbup:

I sent a message probably in vein. This is just another way for OWE Malley to stick his spending habits to the constituents. Hopefully people will realize what a wonderful job he is doing running our state into the ground and eject his A**.

I agree that we should do away with the tolls....they cause way more problems than they solve. I don't use the bridge much, but I understand its value to our economy and would happily pay a little more through taxes to help maintain it.

I have sent e mails to my state senator and the maryland ez pass people. They will get my ez pass unit back as i do not use it as much now that i have retired. Wait until they have to refund all the money that they have on ez pass accounts.

As far as the monthly fee increase, you can get your pass from any state that uses ez pass. Tell Maryland that you will return your pass and get a cheaper one. I have e mail this comment and will return the Maryland issued pass if they get a $1.50 maintenance fee.

Good point...hadn't thought about that. I'm still not convinced that tolls are worth the hassle, but you're right in pointing out that we'd lose a lot of out-of-state money.

For the trucking industry, the state could increase commercial fees to operate through out state. As far as non commercial traffic, I would think less road tolls would lead to more people using out highways increasing spending in our state along the way with food, fuel, hotels, vacations, etc (sales tax collected). Maryland could advertise itself as a "toll free state"

Besides it is a safety, congestion and environmental issue.. What price does it take to lessen those concerns? Tolls are bad for our society :D

Hauling a single axle trailer, it seems like extortion to raise rates 80% to cross the Bay Bridge.

I understand that the prices of goods and services are going up, but there's very few private companies in any industry that could raise their prices 80% and get away with it.

The state feels like they have carte blanche to hold us hostage.

How much does a tractor trailer currently pay to traverse the highways and bridges of Maryland a year?
Dont have the time to look it up but commercial carriers pay a fuel surcharge tax in each state they travel. This tax is paid even if the fuel is not purchased in the state of Maryland. When my father owned a trucking company in NJ he purchased all his fuel in NJ as it was delivered to his business but he still had to pay fuel taxes based on mileage travelled in the state (kept in road logs and based on fuel burned and distance travelled). Many states issue stickers that must be appied to the side of the cabs. There are some states like the State of NY that also charges a TMT (total mileage traveled tax) in addition to the fuel surcharge tax based on mileage alone. My father who hauled water purification chemicals into DC and NYC from DE and was home based in NJ until the deregulated the industry and he could no longer be competitive with his union drivers.

That is how it worked in teh late 80's though.. I am sure you can find the anaswers here: Maryland Motor Carrier Frequently Asked Questions or here: Operating in Maryland or here: https://interactive.marylandtaxes.com/Extranet/red/MFTB/IFTAeFile/User/Home.aspx

Just remeber though that there is no such thing as a corporate tax as they are always paid for by the consumer in the cost of the goods (and services) that we buy.
