Be sure to take a few minutes to shovel off your older neighbors sidewalk or driveway.Seems there are very few kids willing to go door to door and hustle up a few bucks with a snow shovel. My son and I helped out a few neighbors today - did not take too long.

Not sure where all the 15-17 year olds are - guess playing video games .

We got offered some cash but turned it down.I figure some homemade chocolate chip cookies are much better .

My family and I have done that for my next door neighbor for about 10 years. He is a wonderful guy, and is the "neighborhood grandfather" now 88 years old. We always told our kids when they were growing up don't do anything wrong (have wild parties when we are gone, etc.)...Ray across the street sees all, knows all...AND WILL TELL ALL. We always know if we every need anything, he will help. Its things like this that make a neighborhood a neighborhood.

I gotta admit this morning while doing his sidewalk I did catch myself wishing he didn't live on a corner. Thats a lot of sidewalk

Hey skip and son would you ever consider moving to PA. My grandma is 86 years young, lives on the corner of a hill. She was out yesterday 7 degrees shovelin. Some would say she is a little hard headed. I'll make the doughnuts but her cookin is far better.

P.s. Glad you got your grady lady back in the water :D

Skip,
Kudos to you my friend! My son Ray and I have been doing this since he was 2 years old, he is now 12.
We live in the neighborhood I grew up in, and after he does my folks and some other original owners he goes on to shovel for money. He made 125.00 today while no other kids were to be found. He even shoveled the sidewalk at the pool just because there was snow on it.

Help your elderly neighbors because its our turn next!

I have plowed my neighbors driveways for at least ten years. Never have I asked for money or accepted any but I did score some great brownies today. It would be nice if there were more motivated kids out there but I think it is a sign of the times. It is nice to hear of others helping out. Great job to you and your son.

True story on the lack of kids walking around with snow shovels in their hands. We do it ourselves always and prefer it that way, but I'm pretty sure I'd overpay substantially just to reward the RARE quality of having some initiative if some kid came knocking.

I have to say that, starting in my early teens, we were sent out to shovel our driveway and then our elderly neighbor's driveway across the street. We were not allowed to accept money and the door was locked until the job was done. One year, all the parents gathered the neighborhood kids and had us shovel the street, since the plows had forsaken our dead end. In a few years, my oldest will be experiencing the same tough love. We try to keep the shoveling part fun right now so that it's not an awful thing when the time comes to really do it.

P.S.: It was also colder back then and we wore newspapers wrapped around our feet instead of boots.

I think I am the older neighbor now and I don't know how it happened.

When I fire up the snowblower I usually do a bunch of the folks around me.

Since I have a small case loader and live on a secondary road, I clear our street, from curb to curb. Have been doing this for the last five years. People always wave to me year round and I still do not know where they live on the street. It is always better to help out if possible. But, I would rather be fishing then clearing snow and ice.

I dunno about kids these days....back in our day we'd always go to the older folks' homes and shovel their walks and driveways for them. We wouldn't ever ask for payment. Instead we'd usually just ring the bell, ask if they were OK and then offer to check the jars full of money most of 'em had buried their backyards.

I teach my kids just like I did when I was kid in Buffalo to help out don't know when your the old person on the block or need some karma. Since moving to Maryland I have watched some teens throw snow in the older folks steps (if they do anything at all) , ignore their parents and walk right thru the snow. Funny to watch 3 17 year old brush off their car drive off while my 7 year old at the time brushed off her third car.
The karma has come back as my folks both in their 80's not the best of health for my dad and my mom still recovering from cancer surgery living in Western New York the nieghbors take turns running their plows up and clearing the driveway.

I cleared the driveway for a neighbor today and was handed 2 bottles of wine from the local vinyard. Nice to have a neighbor that is the marketing rep. My street has several "older" familys. Myself and 2 others use our tractors to clear about 10 driveways and sidewalks. I do it because I was raised to look out for my neighbors. Usually I come home to find anything from a HUGE plate of cookies to a a bottle of #7 Jack sitting on the door step. I'm just glad I have the time and equiptment to help them. Pay-it-Forward ^_^.
