I was told by the DNR bread esp. old bread is BAD for the birds. Some of it can have small amounts of mold which in turn sicken the weakened birds. Prehaps you should suggest bird feed or cracked corn? I feed them all the time

--TED, I see your handle , I salute you! most bad things happen on the Graveyard Shift ---Takes Exceptional Fortutide & Devotion --

--Your CORRECT , 100% Correct --Please check bread for Heavy MOLD ---I forget as I feed all my Scrapps & Bread to my Private flock out back, But Do Not Save it up like some would have to do ---Hell if your including the Admiral & Kids on a Feeding Trop , Buy a Loaf , the cost of a Gallon of Fuel this year alone will buy 2 fresh loaves --If I'm Correct I don't believe Gulls Have Craws , that require Gravel to grind thier food , so some food like Large seed may be harmfull ? Find out for us ---I never see em graveling like other birds --

--Day Old Outlets are even cheaper ---But Please, Please don't feed where the Straight Gut's will fly too eat on someones Boat ---Small pieces & no Whole Slices --A fast GULP SIZE---

O.K. Catp. I give up, I can't seem to find any information on the corn other then it should be cracked corn to aid with digestion. I have done it for years and have never noticed any harm but one never knows. If you or someone else knows please let me know.
As A side note I feed my deer a mix of 50% corn and 50% roasted soy beans, not cheap but much healthy for them as 100% corn would induce bloat and poss. death.
BTW thanks for the Salute!

--Ted, Get some Blackstrap Molassas & try it on the mix ya use ---As a Dairy Farmer in my youth Cud Chewing Animals I believe would be safe from Bloat --Most Bloat Deaths Are results of eating wind falls in Apple Orchards , Over Ripe Fruit causes DRUNK herds( Cows & Deer) & Dangerous Bloating,Ya gotta keep the oversized Hollow needle Handy (Like you Use on humans)---Don't smell good does it?

I would love to do the Molassas it's cheaper but I have a home bulit gravity feeder. The molassas gets clogged up and then freezes. The feeder is in WV, I have a cabin there and right now it's forcast for a high temp of 4+ on Friday and 2- as a low.
DO you still do any farming now? How can you tell when a cow is drunk?

Please remember that Duck Season is still in until Jan 24. Feeding waterfowl could adversly effect hunters in your area. Hunting migratory birds over bait is a federal crime. If you feed birds in an area, and the hunter does not know it, he might get accused of hunting over bait. Also - if you feed in an area it could be closed off to hunting by NRP - because the area is baited. This is a tactic that is often used by Anti's.

Also - Please DO NOT feed Mute Swans - They are an invasive species from Europe that eats SAV, and out competes with native birds. I know they are pretty, but they don't belong here.

Ted to a fellow night nurse I was looking up some info on feeding birds bread I grew up on the Niagara river and the DNR and the health dept use to post signs about
Avian Botulism outbreaks. If I remember correctly it had to do with the yeast breaking down and the maggots eating it then the ducks eating them and then staying crowded in one area causing the outbreak . Plus they said that bread was a poor quality diet item for them. The few local areas that allowed to feed resident birds used cracked corn only.

Of course they did arrested the guy at the chinese resturant about 4 blocks away for leaving bread crumb trails right to the back of the resturant door (fresh lake duck anyone)

dont forget the OO buckshot in case you come across any mute swans while you're out there feeding the tundra's.
Not in MD - Unfortunately the Mute swan is protected - and are not legal for the average person to shoot. MD DNR has a special USFWS permit to reduce the number of swans. You can blame the "Save our swans" people for bastardizing the Maryland Migratory Bird act.

If you have a swan problem, I can help you get that info to MD-DNR.

It's hard for me to believe the mutes cause all that much of a problem. I think they became a target during the whole save the bay project...taking out the mutes to save the bay is like removing the snakehead to save the stripers in the Potomac...it doesn't matter one way or the other...the stripers won't be wiped out by the snakeheads and the snakeheads are not going anywhere. FYI, LMB are an invasive species too.

How is everything up home? All, is well down here .
Maybe instead o eeding birds, you in all your wisdom, or wiseness, we could teach some o the tidal ish crowd not togo out in reezing butt cold weather and end up dead.
Maybe you have some in o on hypothermia and some other cold weather stupp. Maybe a story or two.
By the way im missing the letter to the right o the D on the keyboard, thus it is le t out.
