Pelosi seems desperate to find someone qualified to appoint to key positions...or someone who she still likes....

Pelosi still must manage another major personnel problem: considering impeached former judge Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.) to head the Intelligence Committee.

"It's hard to talk about culture of corruption and how we're going to be the most ethical Congress ever if you don't take everything into account," said Rep. Eliot Engel (D-Westchester/Bronx).

For all the focus on the Democrats, a former Bush official who predicts a coming bloodbath between the White House and disgruntled conservative Republicans brushed off the Pelosi-Hoyer tussle as much ado about process.

"The Democrats are the sideshow," he said. "Bush self-destructing is the big story in town."

Several moderate-to-conservative Democrats in the House, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of fraying party unity, specifically mentioned two members: Conyers, who has already laid out what he says are grounds to impeach President Bush, and Alcee L. Hastings (Fla.), a senior Democrat on the intelligence committee, who was impeached and removed from his federal judgeship in 1989 for conspiring to take a $150,000 bribe and give light sentences to two convicted swindlers.
