My father in law that lives in VA about hlf the year and the other half in Florida brought his boat home and is planning on fishing the Potomac above 301. His boat is licensed in florida. He will be fishing for catfish and wants to do some crabbing. His Florida license registers him with the saltwater registery. He is trying to figure out if he needs to buy a VA saltwater licence for that area or get the Potomac River Marine Comm License for taking people out on his boat. We now that each individual on the boat must be registered with the free saltwater registery. Anyone fish that area that can help us understand the laws.

Here's the link. Depending on where his boat is registered may make a little difference if he was thinking about a boat license. http://www.mrc.virginia.gov/regulations/recfishh&l_licensing.shtm

* Non-Residents purchasing the Non-Resident SW Recreational Fishing Boat License must have a boat registered in VA. Non-residents without a boat registered in VA are not eligible to obtain the NR Boat License. MD or PRFC license holders with reciprocity privileges can fish in VA without purchasing the NR license - see below for more on reciprocity.

Potomac River - Anglers with saltwater licenses from either Virginia or the Potomac River Fisheries Commission may fish in any portion of the mainstem of the Potomac River to the lower border of D.C.. Virginia licenses honored include: 1) individual annual licenses; 2) individual temporary licenses; 3) private boat licenses covering all persons fishing on the boat; 4) annual licenses for charter boats, headboats, and partyboats; and 5) annual licenses for rental boats.

Note: PRFC licensees may fish in VA tidal water as described above without additional license and do not have to register in the new VA Fisherman Identification Program (FIP). Click on following link for more information, www.mrc.virginia.gov/FIP.

Virginia saltwater recreational licenses purchased for fishing in ocean waters are the same license used for Bay waters and have the same reciprocity described above.

Above the 301 Bridge - you are required to have one of the following:

Potomac River Fisheries Sport Fishing License, or

Virginia Saltwater Recreational License, or

Maryland Bay (Tidal) Sport Fishing License, or

Virginia Statewide Freshwater Fishing License.

Also - his Florida saltwater registry does not register him for MD. If he buys a MD license, he is covered, otherwise he would also need to register for the saltwater registry for MD. I live in MD, but had to register with MD to fish in the Potomac.

tell him to buy a Va boat license and he can fish both Va and Maryland waters. From the Va side of the Potomac the Maryland line start at the normal low tide line. Va and Maryland recognize each other licenses. He will need to do the NOAA registry for Maryland however.

The Maryland license covers the NOAA registry.
