My wife is looking at a kayak today that a friend is selling, who used it 6 times. It's a Pungo 12 or 14. She said 13 but knows she got that wrong because they only make 12 or 14. The reviews are positive - a decent fishing kayak (fairly calm waters), easy to use with no experience and holds a lot of gear. My wife is extremely athletic - Ultras, triathalons, marathons... but I now have tendonitis and can no longer run, so this should help with the exercise. We plan to use it on MD Eastern Shore rivers and creeks. Also for use by family members, children, mostly newbies. Any, all opinions from kayakers appreciated. Thanks.

Size matters

Never used a Pungo, but if you're a big guy, go for a bigger kayak. I'm just 5'6" and 180, but I feel like a 14' kayak on the bay is just about right for me. If you plan to fish the bay proper, I'd get a sit on top. I have a 12' sit-in I use in to fish in quieter stretches of the upper Potomac, and a 14' sit-on-top(SOT) I use in the bay. The 14 takes waves and chop really well, and because it's a SOT it's self bailing. Once in a while I take my wife's 9' sit-in yak to fish with ultralight tackle in the Potomac. It's fine for shorter trips when I don't need to bring much gear.

Good luck and have fun!

My buddy lent me his 12ft Pungo to fish Allen's Fresh, and that's what got me started with kayak fishing. I remember liking it a lot, but I prefer sit on tops for fishing in the Bay and floating down smallmouth creeks. Anyway, I was able to keep it going straight my first time out, I had plenty of room for my boxes and rods (didn't have the skirt on) and it felt really stable (but it was a perfectly calm day on a protected creek). I have another buddy who uses a Pungo to play around in lakes in northern VA and likes it a lot. There are some cool ways to trick them out for fishing on kayakfishingstuff.com. Search for posts by a guy named "joco", I think. In hindsight, I kinda wish I had bought a cheap used boat to figure out what I liked and didn't like, then made a more informed purchase later on. If you can get a good price on the Pungo, it might be a good opportunity to do that.

Zink, ICT - Thanks! It turned out that the one for sale was 6 years old and the owner wanted close to the price of a new one. I'll research a little more and go to a shop in Annapolis with more questions. I'm liking what I've read about the Pungo so far for our needs. Jim

kayakfishingstuff

If you're not in any hurry, check the kayakfishingstuff.com site regularly. I got a good deal on the 14 footer fully rigged. They are in NJ, but when you now what you want you might find a close-out, last years model, etc. I think ITC mentioned this too, but there are forums on the website that have lots of rigging info.
