I'm looking at a 22' 1985 Pursuit cuddy/walkaround with a 1996 225 Evenrude on the back. Besides a compression check on the motor and taking a good look at the transom, what other things should I take a look at? Should I just pay for a marine surveyor up front? It's just had a new gel coat put on.

The cost of a marine survey is money well spent. I wouldn't buy a boat without one. No matter how good it looks or how new it is.

If you don't know what to look for or have the equipment, get a surveyer.
Is the bottom painted (a red flad goes up) you don't know how long it has been in the water. Is there wood in your transom?
Why a new gel coat (another flaf goes up) What was under that new coat and are they covering something?

You need to look at the little things like this and follow "the dots" to get a good picture of what you'll be buying. Don't forget that the boat is a 1985.

Best of luck!
