What makes the SH a better radio?
Comparing the SH with the Ray he inquired about, these features make it better to me:
Digital Selective Calling
Microphone acts as a speaker as well so you can hold to ear while running to hear better.
MATRIX can be programmed to scan any number or combination of channels with or without priority channel. (the ray offers a programable scan just not as in depth)
It also has large nobs for channel changing-whcih most look at as a "nicer" feature.
Just the fact that the Matrix has digital select calling over the Ray makes it hugely better IMHO. This means the unit can connect with your gps and send a MAYDAY signal for you that includes the time and your position. Huge safety feature IMHO!
For a better explanation of the features of the Matrix see here:
As you can see the ray has almost none of these features:
The matrix sells for $133 now (i paid almost $180 last year). The Ray sells for $148. An absolute no brainer!!!!! Besides SH has just been more of a bench mark in VHF's. Ray makes some nice finders, plotters, and radar but they are not up to par in VHF's IMHO
For pricing see here:
I think the Ray 53, now replaced with the 54 has the digital MAYDAY key/function. You will want to check though. They would be more comparable to the Matrix. Both Ray and SH transmit and receive well... If you want to stick with Ray, definately check out the 54!
