Look to get a big reel for the boat. I have always had a love to penn reels and have been looking at the Penn 30 and Penn 50. Which one do you think would be best for the lower potomac/bay? This is going to be my big fish reel.

If you are talking the Penn gold 30 or 50 - that is a lot of money. New go for over $400.00.

The Penn 113 or 113H ( 4/0 ) will handle any rig or Rockfish out there.

The 113 is a low gear ratio - perfect for deep/heavy rigs fished fairly short.

The 113 H ( high speed ) is same reel but higher gear ratio.

Both are very tough reels - around $100.00 or so.

Get a 113H its the high speed. Easy to come by and they take a beating and keep on ticking. The 30 and 50 are for offshore use for big game pelagics. Way overkill for what you need. For that matter get a Penn 330 LD they are bad azz. Release Reels has some awesome reels as well. They hold their own against reels twice their size. But they don't come cheap. My opinion if you are looking for something to be a work horse and hang tough, get a 113H. Mount it to a tsunami or a penn slammer with the roller guides and you are in business for anything that will roll in the bay. Put it this way ive taken a 50lb and a 65+lb amberjack on my 113 and its not a highspeed.
