Sorry for the stupidity of this post but im a 17 year old with a passion for fishing... only one problem i want so much fishing stuff i cant ever save enough to get a kayak, keep buying tackle an rods and reels. recently lost my job an due to the economy im having an extremely hard time finding a new one. does anyone know of an area on the bay where it is possible to rent a john boat or kayak not to worried about the area i have a ton of energy so i can explore all day to find them an not to brag but i eat sleep and drink fishing so if there are fish in the area i can catch them. also not worried about a long drive i like road trips haha... thanks for any information.

Where do you live? There is a place in Solomons that rents and you can take it off site even though there is some pretty good fishing right around the area within a 5 mile paddle.

I live in mechanicsville virginia but i am very familiar with the bay and beach area. if it helps to know my main interests fish wise are preferably specks, puppy drum, flounder, schoolie stripers an the occasional blues and croaker but i prefer an area more so that i can fish im big in fliy fishing, spinning tackle, baitcasters and i have tackle all the way from ultra lights all the way up to baitcasters with 50 pound braid and heavy action rods, and 12wt. all around fly outfits.. so im not exactly looking to go drop bottom rigs and fill my cooler its mostly for the sport for me. also doesnt have to be a great fishing spot i mean if it just a nice area i can enjoy it for the scenary.an thanks again

Ya, thats kinda how I am. Solomons is a pretty good area to launch out of. I go out to Drum Point to start out a longer trip. Once I hit Drum Point I work my way up along the coast line up to the Cliffs fishing the crab pot line. You can make your way to Cedar Point for Drum. I catch a lot of blues right in solomons at the CBL pier and there is a flat right out side of the harbor and you can fish the drop off for Stripers. I plan on using my fly rod more than anything but I love using my baitcaster for some blues.

There are better places to go though like Point Lookout but I like Solomons but thats mainly because I live here so I dont need to make any trips. I do plan on traveling a lot this year.

Sorry to hear about your job. If you don't mind a trip to southern Maryland, there's a place that rents Hobies. Bluhavenpiers.com They're nice and laid back. You could give them a call to ask about their age requirements. A lot of the water here is getting pretty stiff, though. I think Wild River Outfitters - Sea Kayaking Sales, Trips, Tours, Hiking, Climbing, Camping and more in VA Beach might rent, too, but I'm not sure. Home is in Mathews, which is a little closer to you. Keep an eye on craigslist when things improve for you. I've seen some pretty good deals there. Good luck.

Bill, where is this place at? I would be interested in renting one of these for a day?

Hey Joey,

BHP is in Ridge on a trib of the St. Mary's--48409 Smith Drive, Ridge, MD 20680. I rented a Revo and a Quest from them with a couple buddies and putzed around in the creek. The rental rates are really reasonable.

ldfisher,

Check out the Williamsburg Kayak Fishing Association forums (WKFA.org). Most of the guys on there are from the Virginia Penninsula and Central Virginia. I also work in downtown Richmond. In addition I have several kayaks and you can borrow one and join us sometime if you wish.

Cheers!!!

I'd also recommend you watch the main board (and the virginia board and the offshore board) for "HO" requests. It stands for "help onboard" and means people are looking for someone to go fishing with and share expenses. For instance, I regularly have an extra spot on my 22ft sea hunt, and splitting gas for the day between 3-4 people (or even 2 people) is usually cheaper than the rental fee for a rowboat with 4hp outboard at sandy point state park, which they won't let you take more than a mile or two from the bridge. Anyway, jump on a HO request and you'll learn a ton about fishing in the area, and frankly you've got a really good chance of doing better than "schoolie stripers"

I'm in the baltimore area, so not that local for you. But I've been running down to fish the chesapeake bay bridge tunnel every other week or so this winter. In the spring, I'm on the susquehanna flats and at calvert cliffs nuke discharge. In the summer its ocean city or Chincoteage MD to run into the ocean, or livelining/jigging from Sandy Point state park. Anyone who loves fishing and has some basic manners is welcome on my boat any time there's room.
