I've never eaten at Watermans, but they have a great reputation.

The best rockfish I've had has been at Tautogs (23 and Pacific?) and at the Coastal grill.
I've eaten rockfish several ways at Tautogs and each time it was great. It's a casual beach type place.

Coastal Grill served a blackened rockfish with a pickled cucumber dressing that was positively out of this world. It was possibly the best I've ever had. Coastal Grill leans toward the higher end without being "stuffy"

I wish I could give you a recommendation closer to ODU. There are lots of nice places out there, but I don't have any personal experience with them.

Try Harpoon Larry's Oyster Bar on 24th & Pacific Ave. Local's favorite for 18 years. Our fish comes in fresh 7 days a week and nobody beats our prices or our friendly staff. We also have one of the best bars at the oceanfront for relaxing after your meal. Check out our web-site below for nightly specials. Our Rockfish is served a variety of ways from fried fingers to sandwiches to fillets, blackened, sautéed, or grilled.

Steinhilbers?? It would have to be their ALL TIME SPECIAL price wise. I guess my inner ******* just doesn't seem to enjoy having someone wiping tarter sauce off my face for me with their little white towel; I prefer my shirt sleeve after I've swished a cold Bud around in my mouth! Generally I like leaving a resturant with a nice full belly rather than talking about how cute they served that dish with a bunch of colorful stuff you can't eat. Not trying to bust on you but that place is EXPENSIVE and OVERATED.

No one ever wiped my face there and it was still the best rockfish meal I ever had. I never said you have to keep up with the Jones's I just said it was awesome food. If you want to drink beer there, they serve it! If you want to wipe your face on your sleve, that's fine with me... He'll it's not my shirt, what do I care. 6 persons, a couple of appetizers, dinner with cocktails under $225. That's not outrageous but a little pricey.

All the places named are good but I make it a point not to eat Rockfish out as it doens't help my cause as a recreational fisherman, all that does is promote more commercial fishing for them. Beside I know how to cook and catch my own.

Keep in mind that Saturday night is going to be crowded anywhere you go. So crowded that the restraunts (Steinhilbers especially) will not be up to there usual par. Don't get me wrong I completely disagree with MeOff and think Steiney's is the best in the area but I wouldn't go there on Valentines Day. Try to go to a low key place to fend off some of the crowd.

I guess noone understands my sense of humor; but come on we are talking about ROCKFISH. I do not hesitate to pay the extra for atmosphere on the right occasions but paying $30. bucks a plate for rockfish is not one of them. A good surf and turf or a prime prime rib and Steinhilbers would be on the list and I would refrain from wiping my face on my sleeve!:D:D:D
