A couple of weeks ago I caught a tagged fish down at the CBBT. I noted the tag number, length and weight of the fish and released it. When I got home and called the number that was on the tag I found out that I could have gotten $20 for the fish if I had turned it over to VIMS. Since I released the fish they still sent a check for $5. Here is a copy of the info sheet they sent with the check. As you can see some of the tags are worth much more! Thanks for posting.

There have been two tagged fish caught on my boat this fall. One that my son caught off of PLO (skip took care of it for us.. we are awaiting the results) and Last Tuesday off of OCMD we accidentally released a tagged fish while trying to get the hook out

Herb caught a $125.00 tagged fish last year. Mike caught 1 worth $5.00 with the notice that if he kept the fish he would have received $20.00. We will know next time. Actually, he probably did keep the fish and sold it to the fish market.

I got a hat and a certificate from one caught and released at CBBT last year. If you decide to release... measure the fish as quickly as you can then cut the tag off. The tag has the telephone number and tag serial number on it.

The person I spoke with gave me the information on the date of release, location of release and size when released... Kinda cool...

Thanks for posting .
The second photo shows a VIMS tag. These green tags are put in Rock to study Mycro and it is best if the whole fish can be saved. The tag DOES NOT tell you that - unfortunately. The VIMS is doing a study on how Myrco grows in/on the Rock and need the whole fish back.

We called one in after the fish was cleaned and cooked -OOPS.

I think that is with the VIMS tag.Md and Va are in a joint study.
The Rock are caught- then checked for signs of Myrco, photograghed and released.

The key is for us to return the fish after it has been loose for awhile. This way they can get a handle on how fast the Myrco spreads.

Just by chance the Rock my son caught - we took a photograph of it.The VIMS folks could see a lot of tiny red dots on it.When released earlier -it only had a few.

That is a good question. The way Myrco was explained to me - it is an internal disease.Once it gets bad-that is when we see the lesions on the Rockfish. As it gets worse - the Rock will lose weight and the sores get very bad. Most Rock have Myrco but do not show outward signs of it.

I think VIMS has a website about it.When I called in the tag- the people there were really nice and filled me in on the study details.I remember the name Wolfgang as the lead man.

It seems Myrco is worse in the warmer water for some reason.

I caught a healthy one and just received my 5 dollar check. I released it in hopes someone else would catch and to track the migratory pattern. It was healy with no soars so i released it maybe i did the right think maybe not. When i asked the guy he said releasing it with the tag would be good for future tracking.

Bob - when Tyler and I first saw the fish,we both saw a green tag and thought for sure it was a "Diamond Jim". The fish went under the boat on the first net attempt - I am so glad it did not get away.

If it did - then it WAS a Diamond Jim for sure :D.We saw VIMS on the tag and laughed.

There is a trianing facility trianing all the Diamond Jim fish to spit the hook, come loose during netting attempts, break off mojo at the brass, tangle lines and bite shad bodies just to fool you into thinking it was blue fish. The state spent good money on them

I caught one a couple years back that was tagged by the DNR. I called in the information to the number that was on the tag. DNR sent me a hat and a sheet showing where and when the fish was tagged and it's size and weight at the time of tagging. The fish was tagged like 8 years earlier in the Choptank and was like 18". I caught it trolling during trophy season trolling out in front of the Radar towers and it was 30+ some inches. Kinda cool to see that info. I kept the fish but later was told if you wrote down the tag number off the fish and released it, and then called in the information that the next person that caught it would see your fish info on the sheet they recieved. Not sure if that's actually true or not...Anyone know?. I probably would have released it if I knew that before-hand.

i cuaght one around21 inches around cape henry, 2 years ago. it had a yellow cord hanging out its belly and a 8-10 digit code and a phone number. i was unaware of rewards and wrote the phone number down, and threw the fish back. called the number and some kid answered the phone and told him i threw him back but asked where i was and told him cape henry and was surprized and asked how the fish looked. it looked fine and he said he released it out in poqousan and asked if it had sea lice or leasions, and it appeared to have none, but he said i would of gotten 5.00 if i gave him the 10 digit code

hope this helps for what it's worth
