Guys, wife and I are doing our first ever winter getaway to a warm place, and are really looking forward to it. I'm pretty sure I'm squared away on a few good choices for billfish charters, and am looking forward to both the wife and I taking the plunge back at the marina after our first bills.

But I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone has any insider tips. I'm taking a light tackle outfit down with me, and planning to cast some plugs from shore and/or from kayak. Might also take my trevala/avet combo with me and see what I can do with a livelined bait and/or butterfly jig out a little farther (dont' tell my wife about this plan, please).

Anyone have any specific inshore/nearshore recommendations? All the fishing info I can find about the island relates to fishing for pelagics from charterboats.

Very last minute request, but if anyone has a medium heavy or heavy "travel rod" that would break down into 3+ pieces, I'd love to borrow or rent it from you. I have just such a rod from temple fork outfitters, which I unfortunately left in the console of my boat down at CBBT last weekend and can't go back and get it before I leave. Baitcaster or spinning is fine, and I only need to borrow the rod not a reel. Long shot, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. I'd obviously repair or replace in the event of damage or loss.

I know you are looking to fish there, but if you can check out the diving. We went on an awesome dive trip near the Piton Mtns. Nice coral wall and the nice thing is that the current takes you at a nice slow pace horizontally around the outcropping (at least on the day I went) The guides said it is almost alwqays this way. A lot to see and a great leisurly dive in only 30-50ft of water.

Capt. Mike

I was there about 2 years ago and fished with Capt. Mike's Sportfishing. I would NOT reccommend this charter. Equipment was poorly maintained including the boat which was a POS. The mate was very hard working and even got frustrated with the capt as we had ventured far offshore (in 6 to 8 foot seas) only to have reports of a bite close to shore. However, the capt refused to change his plan and we ended up with NOT A BITE to show for it. Mate even said to me that he should have run inshore to put us on the "schoolie" fish. Maybe I just got a bad capt but I was very dissapointed with the trip. Hope you do better!

P.S. the island is amazing and you will have a great trip. I did not run into anyone who was unfriendly the entire time we were there. The people understand that tourism is their bread and butter.
