I would like to do some trout fishing the 2nd and 3rd week of September if they are in. We normally fish the bay and inshore reefs. My inshore distance on a good day is 15mi.
Where to fish?
How to fish them?
What bait to use?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Where would you be putting in? Specks start to show up around the creeks in the lower bay, casting to shore in the creeks with mirro-lures and plastics nails em, but sometimes they come in in sept, sometimes later.

I Stay at Captains Quarters on 28th street and dock my boat there. We will be in OC Labor Day week and the following week. Is the grass area over by the Thoroughfare the type of a of shore that I should look for? Are there trout out on the reefs?

there aren't any trout left...........I'm right on 28th street with you and seriously, you'd be better off flounder fishing. No specs that time of year and weakfish haven't made a decent appearance in about 5 years. I think I saw 1 in the coastal fisherman all of last year. We used to do well on them anchored at night by the route 50 bridge fishing with live spot but again, that was about 5 years ago. Trout are very cyclical in their abundance so who knows, they may come back this year. As for drifting for them offshore, almost all of those fish are only about 10 to maybe 20 inches and you'll be a little early for that run. I know it's not what you want to hear, but there are plenty of other fish to catch that time of year. Good luck.

We have been fishing the bay, inlet and just outside of the inlet for flounder over the last several Septembers' with limited success. We will continue to fish for flounder but I thought that we would add fishing for trout as a fall back if they were available. We were only able to get out one day last year to fish the reefs . The majority of the two weeks were too rough for my comfort to travel outside of the inlet.

Thanks for the information
PS Your welcome come by for a cold one if you are in when we're down there.

JCB, if the flounder fishing sucks, bottom fishing with sand fleas and green crabs around the south jetty or any bulkhead or rockpile in the bay should get you hooked up with triggerfish, sheepshead, and some early tautog action if the weather cools. All 3 fight harder and taste better than trout anyway. Plus it's pretty simple fishing, you just anchor up and bottom fish.

Pretty much hit it on the head. If your here in September, fish at night around the inlet rocks, Stinky Beach area, or Rt 50 bridge, live spot is best, but can catch on jigs like FinS, BA, or the newer Storms. Weakfish, aka Trrout have been slim pickin's the last few years. Trout populations are extremely cyclical, so maybe we'll see an upswing. Time will tell.

Too early for Speckled Trout or in any numbers to target. Should be some resident Rockfish, but Flounder would be the best bet. Remember, night for Trout.
