What is a good general set-up in terms of distance, depth, and lures to run to maximize the chances of catching spring stripers with just 4-5 rods?

This is to help a friend fishing from a smaller boat.

If he is running all boat rods with no planer boards - I'd say: 2 umbrella rigs 50' to 70' back (deepest) - - 2 tandem rigs 90' to 150' back (mid depth) - and 1 tandem 200'+ back (shallowest). Parachute lures with 9" shads everywhere. Weight / depths really depend on the weather-water temp-and where the fish are on any given day. Usually in spring, fish are higher up, so try to cover depths from about 5' down to maybe 25' . I had good luck with this setup before I started using planer boards and more rods.
