Just wanted to thank all of the Striper crazy fishermen that rode by the "Sea Brat" just outside of the fleet off False Cape Sunday 1/18. We were dead in the water with the engine box off and two people working on the engine. There was a couple of boats that passed close enough to see that were having trouble. However, they were so fixated on catching a fish that checking on a fellow fisherman was out of the question. While I had Sea Tow on the phone we we were able to get her started and head back to Rudee. Just wanted everyone to know we made it back safely. I hope no one ever has to watch boats just pass them by as I had to. I do not leave anyone out on the water.

Did you wave any of the by-passers down?

Capt's are required to assist other vessels in ditress that are exibiting a distress signal. Otherwise the boat that has an engine compartment open might not be in distress might just ba adjusting somthing. Look at it from anothers view point rather than assume that the world is against you. If you are concerned with your situation and need additional assistance then wave someone down the worse thing that happens is your engine kicks off and you thank them for the help and you both head back on your way under your own power.

If you don't wave a boat down they most likely think you are just Fooling around with stuff in the boat / motor. A life jacket on a paddle or rod works well. I will never pass ANYONE with a lifejacket up in the air, BUT a boat on the hook... all the time.

Every communication device on the boat works just fine. The four adults on board each had a cell phone. No problem talking to everyone. No one that rode close by us ever looked. They were too busy chasing fish. It is just the attitude some people have of "hooray for me the hell with you". I think everyone posting knows what I mean by that.

Bunch of ****. I at least give a boat that looks like they remotely may have issues a thumbs up or down and look for the response. I have many karma "tows" banked right now and just about everytime it was inconvenient to me. Each time the other boat offered $$ which I told them to save for the mechanic. Us boaters are supposed to be a different breed and look out for each other. Is this just the direction society is going in general? I don't know. For me, it just feels good when I help another in need.

If you are not calling for or flagging for help and you are on the hook, how am I to know you do need help V.S. fishing?? If it's clear you need help such as "sinking or on Fire,, MOB" I can understand you not flagging for help but other wise... don't make me guess

We all need help soon or later on the water, will agree it seems someone might have asked if you needed help. I've helped & I've towed a few boats. Have pulled people off an overturned boat at the rocks of Ft Wool and helped a boat in the shoals at OI with a 18ft boat. But I would have gone right by you if there is "no sign of distress". I think/hope most here, would help a person on the ocean in distress. But there is a big difference sitting looking in a engine compartment and breaking out the flares.

i agree, would not have thought to stop if no one waving or calling on radio. Now here is a question, last summer, inshore 1/2 mile off obx, guy flagged me over, and i go to him. DXead battery, did I have a jumper cable? No. asked me to disconnect one of my two engine batteries and pass it to him, he would start and pass it back. I was not comfortable with that planned abd declined, offered to call Sea Tow for a jump, but he had a cell phone. Would you have unhooked all your stuff from your battery and passed it over?

I will always do at least the thumbs or down thing but I agree, if you really need help you need to let in be known. It appears in this case they really didn't get to that point and I'm sure if they did they would have flagged the hell outta somebody. Capt is just upset he's fishing with a group of guys that he'd stop to help or at least look and nobody even paid him anymind. And thats wrong no matter how you look at it. And its all the other capts out there. If your driving a boat you know what to look for. Fact is, its just not like it used to be out there. There's allot of outta towners out there that probably wouldn't even know what to do as far as help goes. I'm just glad you guys got it going. And I also agree the mentality out there isn't the same. People have become plain rude out there. And theres good reason for that in most cases. But never a reason to not at least give the other capt a look to get a head nod or something. I think theres so many boats out there from outta the area that they just have one thing on their minds, screw you, your lines, and your trolling path, I'm gettin mine! We can only hope those idiots didn't get their limit. I'd tow you anytime. I've had the same thing happen in the baltimore channel one cold night in the dark and w/o spotlighting the next boat coming in we would have been stuck. Sorry you had troubles on the water. We've all been there and if you have'nt, it just a matter of time...

In a second, I carry 2 for plenty of power but if you had descent battery, you would have no troubles. I would'nt hesitate in the future.
