All,

I would like to learn more about the seaside on the Eastern Shore of VA but don't want to get into trouble. Where can I learn about which islands can be accessed, which cannot, locations of public oyster and clamming areas, charts, that sort of stuff.

If you have info to share it is most welcome, or at least a source where I can track it down.

Thanks for your help!

A good place to start is Capt Zeds in Wachapreague. They have charts and info on fishing that area. From there you can branch out to some of the other areas. There is a lot of good fishing in those back bays, but most people keep the info pretty close. As for getting in trouble, that's a guarantee. There are shoals and oyster bars all over the place. Just keep it slow till you learn an area, because you will run aground. Also be aware that there are two types of channel markers back there, intercoastal and to port. The intercoastal is red right south and to port is the normal red right return. It can be confusing if you don't know which channel you're in. Guess I won't even mention the bugs. :eek2:With all this said, I love it back in those bays and it's worth it to take the time to learn the area. It's a different world

Guys,

Thanks a lot for the info! I know people are tight with info and I can't blame them. I will be retiring down there and want to start to learn my way around this coming summer.

Looks like a lot of great places to fish, crab, clam, and gather oysters (can you gather oysters if you're not on someone's lease?), and maybe to do some waterfowl hunting. Lots of marshes that seem to have no name, etc.

I think I will go on a charter or two before I go out on my own.

Hi David

I live 8 miles due west of Wacapreague. I would be happy to show you around some time and share what little I know. I fish mostly out of Wachapreague and Pungateague Creek on the bay side. I lived hear a year and vacationed here for 8 years prior to moving here. My #s Home 757-787-9560 Cell# 757-709-0502 email - [email protected]
