Warren's baitshop in Glen Burnie will have them. They are closed right now for a winter break. They sold a lot of them last year.

Anglers near Sandy Point might have them. They are open all year.

But don't worry about getting caught with them....at least not the first 41 times. :soapbox:
Not if he's a rec. He will lose his gear, his house, his wife and kids and be thrown in prison for several years....If he's a comm then a $20 fine will do

I got one for XMas, will be using it from the dock.....sometimes.
I kinda like going out and catching spot with a light rod, its fun way to start a trip.
The spot trap will be handy on those days when I'm pressed for time.

From Sept 2007 DNR Fishing Page:

The Natural Resources Police has brought it to our attention that the “Spot Traps” that are being sold in the Ocean City area are illegal under Maryland law. Most of the spot traps being marketed are roughly 24”x10”x10”. The Natural Resources Police has brought it to our attention that the “Spot Traps” being sold in the Ocean City area are illegal under Maryland law. Most of the spot traps being marketed are roughly 24”x10”x10”. Minnow traps that may be legally set by recreational fishermen are defined by regulation as having no dimension greater than 18 inches in any direction and an internal volume not greater than 1730 cubic inches. The 24” spot trap, and some of the other sizes of spot traps, exceeds these maximums. Also, the entrance funnel or funnels openings cannot exceed 2 inches in diameter.

Once more with feeling:

Anglers should be advised that using any fish trap in Maryland waters except an approved minnow trap is illegal; so even if the stores are selling fish traps for spot that does not mean they are legal.

FWIW: I think Spot caught just before using them as bait works best. They are much more frisky.

Even Spot kept overnight in a pen lose some spunk.

Traps I saw were around $35.00 - not sure how many you would need to get 20 or 30 Spot.

One way to legally have one is if you have a commercial TFL unlimited lic or a finfish unlimited. I don't care if it's a spot or a rock If the law says no it means no. This came up a while back and when it boils down to if you don't know or can't find the law call DNR don't be lazy. I disagree with Francis's outlook on it. That exact same mentality is what every poacher we complain about has. Okay it's just a Spot but there is a trap law for a reason.

They have several models but they are not exactly cheap.

A while ago there was some question as to the legality of them in the bay. I am not sure if that was ever solved, but, I don't think it would stop me from putting one or two off a private dock.
Whoa, on another thread you're ready to shut down the entire Striper fishery due to poaching, yet you're ok with ignoring this law? Hopefully I'm reading your comment wrong.

Can't we have at least one fishery that we don't run into the ground?

From reading Ed Robinsons' post about size, I don't see anything mentioned that states a spot trap is illegal. If the trap is the proper size I don't see where it specifically states they are illegal. I will do some research and post any info I obtain. Thank you for your responses. Bob
