Im curious to see how the rest of you all set up your spread. i know bright days use bright colors dark days use dark colors. what im asking is do you set up up your spread with all the same colors to look like a bait ball or do you mix it up and switch to whatever is getting the most knockdowns? thanks..

Presuming you're talking about tuna, I guess I'm still old school... Simple spreads, very little fufu, I tie my own sea witches and use blended colors example purple/ crystal with a few strands of black, pink/ crystal, etc. I put a big ole spreader bar in the center and run everything around it, It WORKS FOR ME.

If I find a particular color that works best, I'll add more of it to the spread. I find it's more important to prepare and present the bait properly /rig it right so it won't spin, etc.

The keys to success are PREPARATION, PRESENTATION & EXECUTION.

Hope this helps...

Yup....but the tuna like MEAT..... It is hard to beat a nice bally behind a hand tied witch. I run spreader bars off the flats and a bunch of meat....some times a dredge or 2 on the teasers if the bite is slow enough to get them in the water

Properly rigged ballyhoo swimming behind the boat is the ticket. Doesn't really matter what you put in front of them as long as it is a seawitch, ilander, or squid hoochie type of skirt.

A couple of squid chains or spreader bars will round out the attraction. We like to run 1 or two spreaders bars with ballyhoos chasing all.

If it's too windy to get speader to pull properly a couple of squidchains in the short riggers or flats will work nicely.

For bluefin, when not in a crowd all you need is three rods, a shotgun that is way out there on an 80, and two 50wides from the riggers way back too. When you think you are out far enough, let a bit more out and then you might be there.

first of all, pelagic fish dont see color. always go dark on sunny or cloudy. they see silhouettes and action. think about it, when looking up in the water you cant distinguish color either when looking at a bait or ball. how many baits do you see wearing hot pink or chartruse? they may see variations of dark shades or a flash. go dark boys, and you will see a change.
i have fished from venezuela to cape cod hardcore and do very well. i think action of a bait/lure is most important. but if a fish is hungry he will eat, no matter the color. i have yet to lose a hungry fish or have him change his mind, due to to color of the presentation. i do believe certain fish see different shades of color, ie) tunas prefer darker green and blue marlin prefer dark purple. my 2 cents. anybody with me on this one?

also, all fish (including baitfish) have a camofalging system to blend in to their environment. this is protection, only the weak get eaten. the light up for stimulated behavior. in order to blend in, they are on the darker side. color is lost dramatically the deeper you go because of the water. how many of you looking up at dolphin 15 feet down have seen irridescence and color. i spearfish, and dont. this is why blue/white ilanders are so effective with chrome heads.

All nakeds with a bar down the middle, what bar is based on sea conditions.

There is not a predator in the sea that can resist a naked bait swimming upright..

I like a chugger with a horse on the port short for the blue man.

Seen a lot of big eye's taken off a naked/horse on one of the flats. If there is talk of eyes thats always out.

There is always a split bill on one of the flats on 60# floro

Jimmy:
Shhhhhhh, it's a secret...

Actually, they are DEADLY. I prefer to have a lot of splash to get their attention and I troll a little faster than most, I find a tuna can catch ANYTHING it wants, just watch them sky out on flyers... FRICKEN AWESOME...

Some of my best days are pulling nakeds while scaring up some pointed dirty white boys.

It's time to have a little get together/ rigging seminar, everyone bring their best and let's compare notes.

I started mating offshore last year and have learned a lot from great anglers like..... Becky, Lou, Lucian, Rob, John, a few others and a couple good professional mates in Hatteras and Va Beach that were kind enough to share a little knowledge with a relative newbie to offshore........We fish out of Hatteras mostly and don't catch many tuna, mostly mahi, wahoo, and bill fish.......my typical spread is pretty simple.... way back is a BIG chugger or a nice big bait with a bird.....flats are naked split bills(LOVE EM)........shorts are usually my custom witches and longs are either a sea star, islander lure or a sea witch ..... EVERYTHING has meat......We also pull teasers a splash / squid bar and chain.......oh and dont forget the planer rod......black and purple are the most productive for us..............Still learning, but this spread produced Blue and White Marlin, wahoos, mahi and sailfish this year, so even for a newbie I think I did ok.....will be learning and testing new things till the day I die!!!

Lucian I am ready for a rigging party!!! It wont be long now...I am already starting to have Hatteras Dreams........

Robert:
I'll put one together, it'll be a couple of weeks though, I'm flat on my back with serious back pain. I see a surgeon on Thurs. and I hope he can get me some relief without cutting.

I just purchased a bunch of line to respool my 50's, then I'm going to re fill my rigging bucket. I already have a freezer full of hoos.

Also, I can't wait to get back down to Hatteras, I have a few little toys for the Wahoo and Mahi in the spring.

TAT TUNA:
I remember the day we salvaged on the way in, saw a couple of birds walkin on the water and we pulled over and I put out your little cedar plug and a mini green machine, we bailed a limit of tuna in short order. Your cousin and his bud were DONE!! LOL
