Back in the day we had Bill Burton, Lefty Kreh and hunting and fishing reports on a regular basis. Now we have a part time outdoors reporter who's spending time in the debating section of the sports pages talking about Cal Ripken:wacko:. What gives?

Can there be anything easier for the paper to cover than the Chesapeake Bay and all it's bounty?:thumbup: Everyone complains about bad news always making headlines but it would sure be nice if we could show the folks that print the only paper in baltimore we'd like some regular outdoor articles added to the mix.

Nothing beats having forums like this to read for all our special interests but if politics, food and fashion get regular coverage why can't fishermen and hunters get a little more ink?

Have you seen the Sun Paper lately? Give it another year or two and it will probably be down to a single page. Plus this is Maryland, hunting fishing get a more ink? :hysterical::roflguy::hysterical:

I am involved with Ducks Unlimited and we put on a Greenwing (youth event) every year to try to get kids involved in outdoor activities and have been trying to get Candus to come out and maybe give us some pub to help build the event. It's always "next year". I believe the event is in it's 10th year and never seen her.

We have some of the best fishing in the Mid-Atlantic area for fresh, tidal and salt water and there never seems to be anything about local areas in the Sun paper. Why even have an Outdoor editor???

It's not Candus' fault on alot of things.She has a boss who tells her what to write and where/what to cover.

Write to the editor of the Sunpaper and explain how you would like to see more fishing/oudoor related stories.

I would love to see the Outdoors column everyday - not just Sunday or special stories.

I type up every listing I receive and save a hard copy of each one in a file drawer. What gets in the paper is up to the sports editors. All listings are posted on line.
I received releases from a Jane Zimmer for the youth event for several years, but have gotten nothing from the organization in the last four years.
So please don't tell me I tell you every year, "next year."

The Sun's changes regarding outdoor recreation reporting follow what I feel has been a growing trend: Many young people today just aren't as interested in hunting and fishing as we were "back in the day". To me it's sort of like horse racing was back in the 50's, it's just not that popular anymore amongst the younger crowd.

The Sun wants to sell advertising so the stories they carry need to appeal to the demographics of those who buy the stuff that their advertisers sell. Although we old-time hunting and fishing curmudgeons still buy stuff, we don't buy like those 20 and 30 somethings do. And the stuff we buy is wierd anyway. I don't know about the rest of you but I don't own a single Brittany Spears recording, the idea of spending a day playing Wii games in front of the TV just doesn't appeal to me at all. The only reason I have an Ipod is that it was handed down to me from my 13 year old who upgraded to whatever the one is that plays videos.

There's probably a million reasons why young people aren't as keen on hunting and fishing as we were. Nowadays you can't go outside without getting skin cancer, you can't shoot or eat animals because it's cruel, there are also alot less fish and crabs now in the Bay than ever before, and the water's polluted, it's cold, you have to get up early, it's boring, etc. The most poplular form of camping now is where they set up tents on the sidewalks to be first in line to see a new "Star Wars" movie or when they want to be first to pay a couple three hundred bucks for the latest computer game down at Best Buy.

Anway, that's my rant and I'm sitcking to it.

I will agree that it's been a few (not four) since we have contacted you. Mr. Graf was pretty persistent. You only get ignored so long before you get the idea. Also I am not talking about press releases. I am talking about an invite for you to come out and cover the event in person.

We recived the Sunday Sun and Post. Aftert he holiday we cancelled the Post, wife said they just about begged us to continue at half price, newspapers are in serious decline. Not a good time to be a journalism major.

It's a crummy time to be in newspapers.
And if you don't write Ravens/Redskins stories, editors don't want to hear from you much less give you space.
It's not just at the Sun. I hear The Examiner has cut Boyd to twice a month. The Post has Angus write on a per-column basis. Bill is very sick and I know a lot of you pray for him every day.
If you have a full-time gig at a paper, you can't just write outdoors anymore. That's why I have to earn my keep by pitching in on other stuff.
If Bill, Boyd and Angus were still full-time, they'd be forced to write other stuff, too, I'm afraid, or find a pink slip in with their pay. It's sad.
When I started in this beat in 2000, I had two columns and a fishing report. Editors keep slicing away because they don't hear any complaints from the public, so they figure no one cares.
I'm not whining, I chose this job. Like many other professions, it's changing.
Still, many folks in the outdoors community make it worthwhile: Wish-A-Fish, Project Healing Waters, Mark Hoke and his youth hunts and all the folks, like Capt. Kevin on Megabyte, who teach a new generation to respect and enjoy the outdoors.

There is a big decline in news papers due to the internet. Fads and trends change. It's up to us to introduce the young ones into hunting and fishing. Every one is so busy and it is easier to buy a kid a wii or play station than take them fishing or hunting. Media covers the most popular topics that appeal to the masses. We can make fishing and hunting have that appeal and we will get the coverage again............Gary

Worked for the Sunpapers for 38 years before I retired as a Printer. Seen so many changes, so many editiors come and go. When I started out with Lefty Kreh and Bill Burton you looked forward to Friday to see the sports section on Fishing and Hunting. With so many buyouts, no one is there any more. Its not her fault, there is just no one there. Just a little example of what happen at the Sun. I started wtih 535 printers, retired with 28 people left. What does that tell you. The paper business is really on a decline so I can't see it getting any better. You were right when you said journalism is not the thing to take up in college now.

I thought the sunpaper was just something they use to wrap up sale ads??? You mean some people read that stuff? I do not know anybody who has time to read the paper. News is obtained from the internet, TV and/or radio. Newspapers are a dieing dinosaur.

When I started out with Lefty Kreh and Bill Burton you looked forward to Friday to see the sports section on Fishing and Hunting.

Who was the outsdoors guy that died about ten years ago, he would have fishing reports every friday, tips on how to fish certain areas. I couldn't wait to get the paper on fridays

I would definitely like to see Candy's column 3 times a week ........... used to get 2 papers the Sun with Bill Burton and the Post with Tom Colfield .......... looked forward to the fishing forecast on Thursdays and the full page of outdoors on Sundays ...........

Used to look forward to the stories of the hunts and the fishing trips .......

Ok – Good Point – Beyond the sales and coupons it is essential to have around the house for crabs and starting fires – Then again…. When it is finally gone I can just buy a big role of brown paper, fat wood and get sales info on line – You can preview the sales before the paper is even printed - I know my kids will not miss the extra chore of hauling it all down for recycle day – good riddance….
