Today was the last day for swans in VA. I met my brother at first light. We put out 12 canada goose shells that I painted white and the show began. I have hunted this field ever since we had a swan season and I have been lucky enough to get a tag. This field has never let me down.
As with every year, the swans start to fly around 8:30. Easily two or three hundred came by us. We swore a pack that we wouldn't pass shoot even though we had probably 10 tolls of birds within range. There were four other groups hunting the field. A sad note on Hunter Ethics! Some guys about 200 yards from us shot at the first 7 or 8 groups that tried to come to our decoys and not their's. It is disheartning to have birds dropping like stones heading straight into your dekes only to have bozo's start cracking at them when they are 100+ yards from their blind. The leader of our lease at the end of the hunt told the men in that blind they were basically knuckheads and rude. Nice guests! Won't get invited back.
