Location: Hot Ditch
Lure: 3" Gulp Alive Shrimp (New Penny color)

I went Hot Ditch on Sunday, Jan 11th. After talking with local anglers at Hot Ditch before launching the kayak, I did not expect Specks over 15 ". So Instead of trying to catch bigger speck, I decided catch a lot of small ones to test Gulp Alive Shrimp (3" long and New Penny color). As I was suggested by local anglers, I headed for the creek where the hot water was flowing from (Hot Ditch).

There were 3 boats anchored in a small area. Anglers on two boats were using small live baits. Anglers here usually catch live baits by using cast nets. Anglers on the third boat were using lures. That was a perfect setting for the experiment because I could compare my catches with theirs.

First I used a single float rig with a ¾ oz weight (I was drifting fast by wind at 8-15MPH) in 6 - 15' of water. I used a 3/0 circle hook. I wanted test if Gulf Shrimp works as real shrimps (live or dead). I did not jig intentionally. I had a good bite on this. Possibly the speck was at 17". But the circle hook came out of the mouth. It happened one more time. I switched the hook. I used 2/0 J hook on a float rig. I still did not jig. I got nibbles. I did not set the hook intentionally to see if any specks hooked themselves. No specks were caught after many nibbles during few drifts. The manufacturer stated that fish won't let go Gulp Alive. I think the statement is not quite true. I thought that the fish spitted out immediately when they found it was not a real food. Well I had to set the hook to catch fish.

Secondly, I used a ½ oz jig head with Gulp Alive shrimp. Again I drifted without jigging. I got the nibbles and caught a speck at 12".

I used a tandem rig for the third experiment. I added the ½ oz jig with a Gulp Alive Shrimp to the Float Rig with a Gulp Alive Shrimp. This time, I tested the effectiveness of jigging while drifting with the tandem rig. I got almost twice as many as nibbles when I jigged than when I did not jigged. Because Specks were very small, my hook-ups were not as good as the number of nibbles.

Summary:

I caught more small specks than three boats combined by 2:1 for 3.5 hours period. I caught 11 specks at 9-12" when they caught about 5-6. There were two reasons I caught more. I think I was drifting over the hot spots while the boats were anchored in the same spots. Secondly, the Gulp Alive Shrimp puts our more scent than live baits.

I did not have enough experiments. But I think Gulp Alive Shrimp will work well with the tandem rig with little jigging motions. I could cast the tandem rig just like a single jig and could retrieve it slowly and it worked..

I confirmed what someone suggested. Gulp Alive Shrimp needs to be re-dipped (soaked in the container) often because the scent wears out fast. I changed the Gulp Alive Shrimp every 10 minutes.

I learned that some anglers drift with float rig without jigging. But I found that small jigging action improved the nibbling (because the specks were small) by almost 100 percent.

By the way, I cast MirrorLures lures when I did not jig while drifting. I did not have any hits.

Also as suggested, I used a Twist Lock container (by Zip Lock) to keep Gulp Alive Shrimp. I heard that the original container leaks.

It's always great to see comparisons like this. It really is about as thorough as you can get without setting up a whole experiment with friends. I swear by Gulp! shrimp and they are usually one of the first things I pull out of my tackle box. I like the new penny, natural, and nuclear chicken colors. I've caught so many varied species on them it really helps build confidence in a lure like that. One thing that I have noticed though is that the scent seems to stay on longer when you use the plastic packets of 8 lures. I'm not sure why but I think its because the "sauce" or whatever it is is a lot thicker in the plastic bags vs the buckets. BTW how did that twist lock container work out for you? It only took on spill in my jeep for me to use the bags almost exclusively.

Try gulp 4 inche mullet caught 32 in one day. While the guy next to me using regular plastics pulled up three. Bounce them on the bottom and get ready to catch especially chartreuse. I tried the shrimp too but the 4 inche mullet kill it.

Thanks for the nice write up, Joe. Those Gulp lures are awesome down there. They work for specks, flounder, redfish, etc. That's what I caught the two redfish at PLO this past summer on. The 5" jerk shad works well for flounder, too.

Thanks for the more info. I am planning to buy mullets and shads for stripers at Lake Anna soon. I will let you know the result.

Kenvery,
The container has been upside down while I am on the forum. It leaked a little bit . it is a 2 cup (16 oz) container. I think I can still use it (keep the conatainer in the one gallon zip bag while traveling)

Hale,
Pamlico Sound is a little too far but it is still doable in summer when the day time is long. I can use your rig on the picture. What is the distance between the float and the shrimp? Do you add a weight? if you do, What kind and where do you put the weight

Thanks,
Joe

Gulp "Alive" in the small bucket has a different chemistry than the regular Gulp in the bag.
I had the guys from Berkley in the boat with me last summer and they told me what they could about Gulp. (Very hush-hush about it).

Any way,,here is the way I rig mine in the fall to catch plenty of trout. The solid brass beads are important. They work better than the lead with the plastic beads for calling the fish in.
If you look close at the DOA hook it has the bait keeper barbs on the shank that help hold the Gulp shrimp on the hook. Its made by Eagle Claw.

Here is another trick I do with the left over Gulp,,,The pin-fish love it, but so do the trout Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha.

Good luck guys!

Here is another trick you can do.

Im sure some of you have seen the new Berkley Power Baits and the different ways to rig them. Here is the new Hollow Belly.

Here is another way I rig them for longer casting and also for fishing deeper water.
I dont think I need to spell it out for ya,,,the pic's tell the story.

I like the red tint inside the lure........

Thanks rick. Good stuff there. I'm very intregued with the hollow bellys. That style bait seems to have taken the LM bass world by storm the last couple of years and can only imagine it would work wonders for light tackle shallow water salt water species.

Are those gotcha jig heads? I think I've had some problems with them bending on me with larger fish. I try to stick with Kalins jig heads when I can or some other hook with the black nickle finish to it.

I used some berkley eels (10") and 7 inch berkley jerk shads for stripers last weekend. We couldn't buy a bite on our regular bass assasins or BKD the other day but they loved the gulp on jig heads.

The one problem we had was the tearing of the gulp jerk shads too easily. I still kept the used ones and plan to either glue them back to gether or just rig them with a DOA hook like you show above because I can no longer get a jig head into them. I'll fish them on a drop shot rig often used for large mouth with finess worms. Or on a three way.
