In an earlier age, this would have been natural selection at its most efficient......create a gap of frozen water leading to an ice flow in the middle of a cold lake, and see who goes and who thinks twice.

Man the Darwin awards are just racking them up today
check this video
Ships Collide in Antarctic Whaling Clash Who is the give way vessel ??
Of course the burdened vessel is the overtaking vessel. I watched on the tube where Steve Irwin crew actually boarded one of those whalers. I wouldn't blame the whalers if they had repelled with deadly force. Those people are gonna get dead.

My favorite quote from that one-
"It's a shame you can't arrest people for stupidity."
I might have to borrow that one...:D:D

I heard the local sheriff's rant on TV yesterday. He was extremely angry & venting on national TV about how much the rescue cost his district because of "stupidity." Then he was ripping all of the fishermen that were out there to include the one who died. Their bad judgement be very true but the sheriff deserves a Darwin for anger management issues. He obviously has an ego as big as the county and needs some protocol lessons. Maybe HE is partially responsible for not closing the fishing area due to thin ice conditions.

Jim, I have to disgaree with you a little bit. The dangerous ice conditions on Lake Erie are well known to local fisherman. It's more like an ocean than a Lake. The ice sometimes piles up 30-feet as the various plates drift into each over, so the unstable nature of it is apparent to even a newbie. My friends and I recognized how dangerous it was back when we were 7, 8, 9, 10 years old. We were allowed on the ponds, but not the Lake (we went anyways a couple times and scared the @#%# out of ourselves).

Lake St. Claire is a big Lake, but an entirely different beast than Lake Erie. It actually freezes over many winters (or at least did in the 70s). Bob, remember the snowbile races on the ice and the parking lot of cars out on the Lake ('74-77')?

According to the rules posted in an AP article

"Under current policies, a fisherman's name is recorded the first time he's rescued. The second time leads to an ice safety class, and the third can result in civil action and fines."

after the second rescue they should just wave from shore on the third

Look me in the eye and tell me that you never did something "stupid" chasing fish.

Perhaps going out when it was rough , staying out in a storm , running in darkness without radar, fishing off a log, rock or other unstable platform :D.Crossing a field with bulls to get to a pond, wading into 2 foot deep mud to retrieve a lure, climbing a tree and laying on a branch to get the perfect cast angle :pp. The list goes on and on.

We all do dumb stuff fishing.Putting a plank over busted ice is common on tidal water.I never thought twice about it.Every year some ice fishermen get carried off on an ice floe.
