Great article in January/February issue of Tide (national publication of CCA) about the grassroots oyster restoration project started by the Patuxent River chapter of CCA.
There was some talk about extending this to the Severn and South Rivers a while back. Anyone know if there has been any movement in that direction?

Hey PopZ - We should some expansion in the program this year. The real trick is identifying Creek Captains who are willing to handle 20 to 25 waterfront homeowners and coordinate their activities. I lead the Hellen Creek project. We have identified several other captains to start more projects over the next year.

In fact, down here on the Pax, our chapter plans to expand our restoration efforts by about 10 fold over our current 100,000 oysters.

In the meantime, you can participate in the CBF oyster gardening project OR get your own floats for your pier from one of several vendors on the bay (Like Circle C Oyster Ranch). The state will give you a full tax credit for float raised oysters....

The Severn has about a dozen small oyster reefs created/restored over the past decade, but also had a three-acre/4-million spat reef added this fall. The oysters in the previous reefs seem to be doing better than anyone imagined, so hopes are high for the new reef. My hope is that about 75 acres of reef are eventually added/restored, but it's an uphill battle right now. Every time money becomes available, it seems to get split dozens of ways to cover everyone's pet environmental project, instead of going towards the one thing that could probably get us the fastest to clean water.

That is a really cool project and hats off to the CCA Patuxent River Chapter and the dedicated members. This is real grassroots volunteerism.

A lot of people point fingers and blame others for the Chesapeake's problems, these guys are doing something about it. I am thinking about doing something this year up at our end of the Patuxent. Real grassroots

Hi John,

The next pax chapter meeting is Wednesday, Jan 28th. And we'll have a representative from NRP coming to speak (maybe from the top).

I need to hook you up with another member from the south river area that's interested in getting something started up - I think you guys could make a good team. It's great to see other chapters wanting to start projects - all it takes is a few good volunteers.

Scott since I live in Lorton Va. It’s too far to come for the meetings but I will surely be there for the projects. If polishing off the bar tab is a problem let me know and you and I can wipe it out one weekend.

I read the article over the weekend, then gave it to the first mate to read. I believe the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, of which she and I are both members, is doing something similar, but I need to double check. Great article!!

It was a great article. You guys are doing a terrific job, thanks to CCA.

If they would grow in my area I would gladly try to raise some. One thing we have in the upper, upper bay is grass and it is also doing a good job filtering the water.
