I'm starting to think I'd like to try my hand at jigging for Striper and have a decent understanding on what to do, except I'm not clear on when/where. When birds are around, I know where to go, but otherwise I'm lost. Do people that jig have favorite spots that they know produce or do you start out trolling until a large school is found on the fish finder, then switch to jigging?

I would always prefer jigging to trolling but its a matter of personal preference. Some people will tell you its the only way and there is nothing better than a big fish on light(er) tackle versus trolling with broom sticks. I learned a lot from reading Shawn Kimbro. He works the upper bay but his information is still very solid down here. One thing that is pretty consistent is that jigging can be highly unproductive unless you find the fish first whether its shallow water jigging or deep. Unlike trolling you are not covering big water with 9 rod spreads and dragging them for miles. Take a read on a couple of these articles and a lot of your questions will be touched:

Jigging is done on plentiful rockfish marks (especially around birds, but not always), or on structure (reefs, asphalt piles, bridge pilings, edges, lighthouses, bars, points, etc.). Current is important when looking for them on structure. Good luck!

make sure you have plenty of pixie dust when you break out the Fairy wands ;) I often think about jigging on those deep marks when I know I can't get my trolling spread down to them..... one of these days I'll try it...... maybe.

If you become proficient at jigging, your trolling game will significantly improve!
Nahhhh...If you become proficient at jigging, you will sell all your trolling gear!! lol :) All the Pixie Dust will settle on your trolling rods while sitting in the rack! lol

In all seriousness, you will usually catch larger fish trolling, but will catch MANY fish jigging. This time of year tho, bigguns can come either way.
