Three people were rescued from a 71-foot fishing trawler tonight after it lost power in Oregon Inlet and began taking on water.

At about 6 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard got a distress call from the crew of the Boss Lady. The three crew members donned survival suits and climbed into the pilothouse, the highest point on the vessel, a news release from the Coast Guard said.

Two rescue boat crews from the Coast Guard's station at Oregon Inlet and the crew of the tug Candice L., owned by Robin's Maritime in Norfolk, tried to help, but the vessel was hitting rocks and was inaccessible to the other boats.

While a rescue helicopter from Elizabeth City headed to the scene, the boats remained nearby to help if anyone fell into the water, the news release said.

The three people had to be hoisted into the Coast Guard rescue helicopter. By the time the three were aboard the helicopter and headed back to the Oregon Inlet station at about 7 p.m., the fishing trawler was submerged up to its pilothouse.

No injuries were reported.
