I guess all areas are different but we usually crab trap in shallow spots 3-6' sometimes up to 8-10' but never deeper than that. I would say it would be hard to use topless traps in a current over 12' or so our lines are 12'. It would be a nightmare to fish shallow with 25' or more of line with the lines being carried by wind and tide. I have seen corks with line wrapped to shorten them up but 40' man not sure I could pull those topless traps fast enough to keep the crabs in and trying not to run over traps. Hope that helps.

I have never had more than 15' on a topless trap. 40' is insane. These traps are great early season especially when the water is clear. I gave all mine away because my back can't handle them!............Gary

21 traps need to restock after a few casualties but they were still catching when we left and we slept in not getting to boat ramp until 9 AM.
