what ever happened with the TWIC requirements?
i know that it was discussed here about a month or so ago but haven't heard anything since.
as of today, the USCG recorded message still says that we have until 4/15/09 to have one or loose our licenses.

They've pushed the deadline back a couple times, now. It's really easy to get it, and there is basically no wait-time in the office at all. I got an appointment for my application, but it really wasn't necessary- there was hardly anybody there. Same thing when I went back and picked up my card.
No surprise at all that the Key West guys are a bit behind.;-)

I have been hearing they have changed thier minds about requiring charterboat Captains to have A TWIC. If I didn't already have mine I would wait.

Cujo, I only made that jab about the KW guys, cuz I mated a few times on the Flordida Fishfinder out of Stock Island (just north of KW) many years ago. It's a different ballgame down there.

If you go to Baltimore, I recommend making an appointment. I made an appointment and was there for exactly 15 minutes. The room was packed with folks who did not make an appointment - an hour wait or so.

In about 3 weeks, they notify you that you can pickit up. Must apply in person each time.

Pre-enrollment site. TSA: Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC™) 1-866-347-8942
This will expedite processing time. I was told you should do this first!

The dead line is April 15,2009 I have the information right here in my lap that the C.G. sent me.

I dont have mine yet.........................
According to the following, you have to have it in baltimore by the end of the year, mouth of the bay a couple of weeks later.

For once,,,,do you think the government can figure out what they are talking about...........

There is a lot of information that contradicts it self. The information that I have was printed on July 2008. Here is a pic of the letter they sent me.
I'm in Charleston,SC where we have a major weapons station, an old navy base where they still keep lots of navy ships, a Coast Guard station, and three major cargo terminals.
The need for security is pretty high here.
They will close the river at a blink of an eye when they have that "Special" cargo come in. A lot of times the cargo ships are escorted by the C/G!

Some common sense tips:

Don't sit around waiting to hear anything FROM the USCG.
Don't go to a Center without an appointment.
The online link provided allows east sign-up with subsequent appointments (2).
It's not brain surgery, and every document holder must have one... USCG may revoke and/ or you can't renew without it.
Took me 3 weeks, start to finish.

I don't understand the purpose of it,,,,whats to stop someone (Terrorists) from buying a boat and filling it full of explosives and blowing up a ship or bridge???????????????????????????
Why in the hell do we need one?

Just another way for the government to take money from us.

From the TWIC website:
"TWIC was established by Congress through the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) and is administered by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and U.S. Coast Guard. TWICs are tamper-resistant biometric credentials that will be issued to workers who require unescorted access to secure areas of ports, vessels, outer continental shelf facilities and all credentialed merchant mariners. It is anticipated that more than 1 million workers including longshoremen, truckers, port employees and others will be required to obtain a TWIC".

It's basically a background check. Credentialed Mariners already have that but the Govt. can't figure out how to convert it. They will give you a discount on your TWIC, in some cases, but it's not very much of one.

The general public here in Charleston already have unescorted access to secure areas of ports and they will never have a TWIC card..............

The average boater will have the same access that a person with a TWIC card will have.
So why does a charter captain have to have one..........................

Its all a bunch of B.S.
